- The filesystem on the internal hard drive on our NeXTstation has been
- corrupted. The dump program attempted to dump the drive onto itself.
- Although the dump was aborted quickly, it was apparently not aborted
- before the process had begun to write on the hard drive. This drive was
- our boot device and, short of devine intervention, will have to be
- rebuilt. At least I cann't see an alternative to rebuilding it.
-
- Unfortunately, this dump would have been the first back-up of
- the drive. We would like to back-up all of the files on the drive that
- are still intact (which should be almost everything). I have two
- questions:
-
- 1) What are the chances of repairing the filesystem
- sufficiently to mount the drive? For example, would 'fsck -b'
- be a reasonable thing to try? I assume that the primary
- superblock was at least partially overwritten. On the other
- hand, this could do more damage.
-
- 2) If the filesystem cann't be repaired sufficiently to be
- mounted (which is likely), are there any utilities that would
- allow us to copy files from the disk?
-
-
- Any advice would be appreciated. If anyone knows of a worse disaster I
- wouldn't mind knowing about it. Misery loves company!
