- Well, according to specifications dircectly from a flyer produced by
- Microsoft on the upcoming Windows NT:
-
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
- The Microsoft Windows NT operating system runs on Intel 80386 and higher
- systems with a recommended configuration of 8 MB of RAM and 100 MB or more
- of disk space, or on similarly conigured RISC based systems.
-
- I'd say that those are pretty steep hardware requirements which I'd
- be more than happy to live with on a 68030-based color Mac (I do fine
- with 5 megs of memory and 80 megs of HD). I figure that the way most
- companies advertise the requirements of their products, wanting to have
- an extra several of megs of memory and a much bigger hard drive will
- soon become needs as the market for NT-specific products grows. There
- is also mention of networking capabilities ("...built-in file-sharing
- and print-sharing capabilites...") with absolutely no mention of the
- extra hardware one needs to purchase to take advantage of these
- features. The flyer also seems to leave me with the impression that
- Windows NT was developed for the high-end of the PC market, not some
- dirt-cheap 386/386sx clone with *nothing* inside except a 80-100 meg HD
- and a plain vanilla Super-VGA card from "Joe's Bargain Basement
- Computers and Fishing Supply". The question of customer support from
- Microsoft must also be raised.
- What will Windows NT cost? I doubt that it will be as low as what
- Windows 3.1 and OS/2 are currently selling for. With the multitude of
- enhancements added as well as multi-platform support, I don't even want
- to speculate on the price.
