- WHAT IS WAIS?
-
- WAIS is an emerging Internet service for the searching of a
- distributed
- set of databases. The protocal is based upon the ANSI draft
- Z39.50. WAIS
- stands for Wide Area Information Servers and orginated as a
- project
- between Thinking Machines, Apple, and Dow Jones. Thinking
- Machines has
- been promoting WAIS by providing a free server and client
- software. The
- Macintosh client, WAIStation, was written in TCL by a
- subscriber to TCL-
- Talk. For more information about WAIS and using WAIStation and
- SWAIS,
- see [ftp.brown.edu:/pub/tcl/00USING_WAIS].
