  136. WHAT IS WAIS?
  137.  
  138. WAIS is an emerging Internet service for the searching of a
  139. distributed
  140. set of databases. The protocal is based upon the ANSI draft
  141. Z39.50. WAIS
  142. stands for Wide Area Information Servers and orginated as a
  143. project
  144. between Thinking Machines, Apple, and Dow Jones. Thinking
  145. Machines has
  146. been promoting WAIS by providing a free server and client
  147. software. The
  148. Macintosh client, WAIStation, was written in TCL by a
  149. subscriber to TCL-
