- Every Shiva product I have ever used has had to have it's case left open, or it
- would overheat and go into thermal shutdown. A nomimal 9-10 vac transformer
- produces 1.41*vin DC or about 13-14 volts. In reality, the cheap wall
- transformers usually do a bit more, and so I'd expect to see about 16 volts. I
- would not consider 20 volts that unusual, given tolerance add-ups, and the
- differing line voltages you encounter. That leaves the poor 7805 to drop twice
- the power the rest of the modem (11 volts at current vs 5 volts) uses in total.
- So, it runs VERY hot.
