- Hmm... While I totally agree in principle, perhaps Apple
- has different experiences?? Let's see! From recent articles
- I recall the following:
-
- ADB Apple Desktop Bus
- ADSP Appletalk Data Streaming Protocol (?)
- AFP Appletalk Filing Protocol(?)
- ARA Appletalk Remote Access(?)
- DAL Data Access Language
- DAM Data Access Manager
- OCE Open Collaberative Effort
- PDA Personal Digital Assistant
- PIE Personal Intelligent Electronics(?)

- Of course, no mac programmer would fail to recognize HIG, MPW or IM,
- and the mac supports many standards (SCSI, ISDN, JPEG, SQL, ...)
-
- I'm sure I've overlooked dozens. However, your point remains:
-
- On the mac we have the Finder, not a "GUI" but rather a "HI" (human
- interface). Many other computers seperate the OS and the human
- interface artificially, providing a "GUI" with an ISA (Important
- Sounding Acronymn) like WPS, which as you correctly point out is not
- in fact a "shell" at all but rather an interface.
-
- Still, I wonder if acronymns don't help sell computers, especially
- into business.
-
- Saying: "We're intending to implement both EDI and EIS services using
- SQL through DAL over DAM on an ISDN LAN, tied to PDA and PIE's through
- OCE via ARA as a WAN, and RSTS public keys for DSV," sure sounds a lot
- more impressive than saying, "We're going to use Macs and Newtons to
- provide e-mail and sales figures to the executive staff."
-
- Which do *you* think the VP of CIS will be to get the CFO to
- sign a PO for? <grin>
