- General comment: There's a lot of discussion of "PCs" vs "Macs," and
- there's a lot of confusion because people mix up PC hardware with PC
- software, operating systems, file systems, etc. My earlier comments, for
- example, compare the filesystem in the MacOS to the filesystem in DOS,
- Windows, and other OS's which use the same filesystem for compatibility (I
- understand Windows NT uses a new filesystem). Almost all of the arguments
- claiming that PCs are cheaper refer solely to hardware, and not to OS's or
- software. NeXT is porting their OS to the PC hardware platform. Think
- about how many of your arguments wouldn't make sense if you were running
- NeXTstep on a PC. To counter the "PCs are cheaper" arguments, we have to
- demonstrate that the hardware itself is inferior, and thus that any
- conceivable operating system running on a PC is at a disadvantage.
- I'll leave it to the experts to expound on the many advantages of the
- Motorola architecture over the Intel architecture, and just address
- more down-to-earth issues like construction quality and attention
- to detail.
-
- I don't think there's any doubt that, by some measures, PC hardware is
- cheaper than Mac hardware. Of course, generic-brand ice cream is also a
- lot cheaper than Haagen-Dazs (sp?) and some people probably couldn't tell
- the difference. How can you quantify quality? One thing I do know is
- that I get one hell of a warm-fuzzy when I first open up Mac hardware, and
- PC hardware doesn't give me the warm-fuzzy. Just look at the way
- everything fits together on a Mac -- the way the icons on the cables match
- the icons on their mating connectors, the attention to detail in the
- packaging (an enclosed packing list, manuals labeled "Start Here," etc.)
- Even after setting up many dozens of Macs, I still love this stuff. I've
- set up an equal number of PCs and they are a royal pain in comparison.
-
- I like the analogy between cars and PCs. To me, a PC is like a Chevy
- while a Mac is like a BMW. You can soup-up a Chevy and stick on enough
- aftermarket contraptions to make it compare in objective terms with a BMW,
- but it will never really be like a BMW. The Chevy may do 0-60 faster,
- have a higher top speed, etc., but the BMW gets you to your destination more
- efficiently and with a lot less hassle.
