- I have never had the chance to use Maple or Theorist or Mathematica
- but was
- once a dedicated user of SMP (predecessor to Mathematica) and
- Macsyma. I
- shopped for a long and hard for a mac symbolic package but price
- was always
- a barrier to me. Finally, AT LONG LAST, I caught wind of ALJABR
- which is a
- port of Macsyma to the mac. It does not have a pretty user
- interface but it's
- got all of the guts of the old Macsyma.
-
- I just finished a project requiring extended fp arithmetic, power
- series and
- integration and was absolutely amazed at what came out of my old
- mac+ at home
- and IIfx at work.
-
- ALJABR is definitely worth looking at.
-
- I have used both Mathematica (on the Mac) and Macsyma (Sun). Macsyma
- has a few more built in functions, especially with regard to discrete
- mathematics. In both environments, however, it is fairly easy to
- extend the package by doing a little bit of programming. Mathematica
- has a fairly powerful programming language and enough basic
- functionality so that you should be able to build the proper tools
- with a little bit of effort. If you can afford the student version
- ($150), or spring the extra for the fp capable version (sorry, don't
- know the price offhand), the symbolic capabilities of Mathematica are
- powerful and extensible enough to make this a fairly good value.
-
- caveats:
-
- o You might want a little more horsepower than a 4MB Mac+ can
- provide, especially if you want to do graphics.
-
- o If you have to shell out the non-educational price, you might look
- into less pricey systems (but, as a previous poster stated, stay away
- from Theorist).
-
- o Make sure you have >=6MB for reasonable performance.
-
- o Be prepared to give up ~10MB on your HD.
-
- o Again, for graphics, a color monitor makes this a much more
- worthwhile aspect of the package.
-
- Hope this helps. If you want more info, you can email me for
- specifics, or drop into your local bookstore and leaf through the
- Mathematica book.
-
- Hope this helps.
