- Whether or not the Performa 600 will support A/UX is, as someone else
- alluded to, largely a political decision. I can just about guarantee that
- it will *not* run with the current version of A/UX. Just about any new
- hardware platform requires an incremental update to A/UX to support it
- (it's the same with System software. Even 7.1 will require an extension
- to support a new platform). Whether or not to provide that update is
- largely a political or marketing decision.
-
- Regarding the FPU, the FAQ list for comp.unix.aux does state that an FPU
- is required to run A/UX. I'm not sure why, however. The IIsi doesn't
- come with an FPU but is capable of running A/UX. Do you have to buy the
- NuBus or PDS adaptor with FPU to run A/UX with the IIsi? I don't recall
- any mention of FPU availablility for the Performa 600. I think the IIsi
- is unique in that it's the only Mac that comes without an FPU but which
- *Apple* provides an FPU for. If Apple requires an FPU for A/UX to run,
- and Apple doesn't offer an FPU for a machine, you can bet that they
- won't support A/UX for it. That would mean that Apple relied on
- 3rd-party hardware to support their own software.
