Yes, in fact the HP DWC comes with a color and a b/w cartridge.  When the
printer has a color cartridge installed and needs to print black, you
actually get composit black (Blue Red and Yellow mixed together) and does
not appear as "black" as does the B/W cartridge.

The life of the cartridge depends on the mix of colors you print with.  If
you use mostly one or two colors, it is possible to run out of one or two
colors and have plenty of the remaining color(s).  The other factor is the
density specified in the page setup and the amount of print and/or graphics
on the page.
