- I just ordered the 50mhz PowerCache without math coprocessor for my LC II
- last night from MacWarehouse for $1242 (including adaptor and overnight
- shipping. The IIci doesn't need an adaptor which would save $39). It
- should be arriving any minute. Mac's Place had a better price in the
- latest MacUser ad (a little better on the one without coprocessor, but
- significantly better on the one with coprocessor), but I live in the same
- state so I would have had to pay 8.2% sales tax (The Mac Zone is also in
- my state. Ugh!) With all the discussion lately about mail-order ripoffs,
- I wanted to go with a place I knew was reputable.
-
- Daystar has a special upgrade offer to their 33mhz 68040 PowerCache which
- is coming out soon. It's $99 if you're coming from a 50mhz '030 with
- coprocessor, and $399 if you're coming from a 50mhz '030 without
- coprocessor. This only applies if you bought the 50mhz '030 after August
- 1. The normal upgrade path (difference in retail price) will be an
- additional $300.
-
- I got the PowerCache without a math coprocessor for two reasons:
-
- (1) very few applications use the coprocessor. Apparently even spread-
- sheet programs ignore the coprocessor except for certain functions
- (trig functions, for example). Look at the latest MacUser and
- you'll see that the PowerBook 145 and 170 were virtually identical in
- Excel recalcs, even though the 170 has a coprocessor and the 145 doesn't
- (my own experience mirrors this. I originally got a DayStar PowerMath
- (16mhz math coprocessor only) for my LC II to speed up Excel recalcs
- (I keep my checkbook, budget, credit cards, etc. in linked Excel
- spreadsheets). The coprocessor didn't make one whit of difference.
-
- (2) In my case, there was an exactly $300 difference in price between the
- PowerCache with coprocessor and without. Since the price to upgrade to
- the '040 is exactly $300 different as well, the final cost will be the
- same (and it's easier to swallow $1242 now and $399 later, rather than
- $1542 now and $99 later). If you know you're going to upgrade, and
- you can get the 50mhz with coprocessor for less than $300 more, you
- could save a few bucks.
-
-
- As soon as I've got my PowerCache installed, I'll test it out and fill in
- the net. Naturally I'll post those all-important Speedometer numbers :-)
