- This is the sound uttered by Rob Williamson the night before giving his prelim

- was only eight hours away, it was 2 a.m. and he had not come up with many

- The sound makes a good error beep. It was created on a PowerBook using the

- SpeedyFinder7 v1.5.3 - additional release notes
-
- Important Information - read this!
-
- I initially released v1.0 to 1.4 locally within the Sydney region. Version 1.5
- was uploaded to sumex-aim and has since gone all over the world. This has
- completely taken me aback. The InterNet was a completely foreign concept to
- me.
- I am still learning how to use a UNIX OS and failing miserably.
-
- I understand that people were having trouble getting bug reports to me because
- they saw no recognisable InterNet address. I hope that the new document fixes
- this problem as I have provided two InterNet addresses (the second actually
- mails AppleLink). Thus instead of users complaining madly over the network and
- not doing anything about it, you can hassle me (but not all at once about the
- same problem, please).
-
- I think you should also know that this Control Panel was originally an
- Extension
- without an interface. I only put that interface in for my benefit. In fact,
- the
- whole idea was really written for my benefit. Despite the fact that many users
- complained that v1.5.2 did not work with other applications and caused
- dialogue
- boxes to be misplaced, those problems never occurred during its development on
- my Macintosh (they still don't). I also think you should know that I am in no
- way obliged to fix those problems that I had never encountered. But because
- I'm
- such a nice guy :-) I have chosen to do so and to implement ideas suggested by
- other people as well. I call this support for you. How about you show some
- support for me and send that recommended fee of Aus$20.00 to me?
-
- On a lighter note, it is week 9 of 15 of the second semester for me. I will be
- overloaded with examination pressure in the coming 6 weeks. However, I will
- continue to support this product (assuming you support me; and why not because
- this is such a RcoolS Control Panel) and will also continue to reply to mail
- for
- the next three weeks. After that, I will enter examination wind-up and may or
- may not choose to reply to mail. You can continue to send me mail and I will
- log
- it and reply after the completion of my examinations (early November). Sorry,
- that's just the way it is! That period will be about 5 weeks duration. If the
- bug is urgent then label it so, but don't abuse that privilege!
-
- If you are installing this over an older version, please do not open the
- Control
- Panel before you restart (or hassle with mail about bugs if you have). You
- should restart before opening the new versions Control Panel. This is because
- I
- haven't implemented a separate preferences file yet.
-
- I hope that this version addresses most if not all of the conflicts and
- problems
- that people have been reporting to me (which by the way I do thank you guys
- for). That's the reason for the lengthy delay in release. Also, if you've
- received advice from me or from somebody else to switch to 32-bit mode to
- solve
- the dialogue box problem, that's no longer necessary in this release. You can
- switch back to 24-bit mode. If there's an idea you would like to see
- implemented
- and I haven't done so then continue to hassle me. Also, if there's a problem I
- haven't fixed then bug me, or my bugs will bug you!
-
- Thanks,
- Victor Tan (13-Sep-92)

- From: rudman@mondo.engin.umich.edu
- Subject: [*] SpinCursor Library 1.01
-
- NOTICE: This should replace the older version of the library
-
- This is the SpinCursor library, AGAIN ... UGH.
-
- Some of you may have already noticed there was no protection against
- installing more than once, and so the cursor jumped all over the place
- before finally dying a horribly yucky death. I installed a global variable
- called gCursInstalled, and this will fix it; now you can call
- BeginSpinning() and StopSpinning() without worry as to what will happen.
-
- Some notes for first-time users (read: people unaware of what a VBL task
- can do)
-
- o VBL-based spinning cursors will probably continue to spin even after the
- Macintosh has crashed. During true Mac crashes, however, the cursor
- will
- not MOVE anywhere, it will just spin. Good? Bad? You be the judge.
-
- o It would be a nice gesture for you to call StopSpinning() if you receive
- a suspend event, and then BeginSpinning() (if necessary) when you
- receive
- the resume event. Otherwise, you may be "giving the gift of spinning
- love"
- to other processes; this is defined in the dictionary as "NOT NICE".
-
- o Before you allow a user to quit your program, you should issue a
- StopSpinning() just to be on the safe side. Otherwise, the VBL will
- remain in memory, and it will attempt to JMP to a CODE which is no
- longer
- available. Can we say "crash" boys and girls? I knew you could...
-
- o Some people are very, very accute, and they have noticed some small
- flicker
- in the spinning cursors. This is because the calls to SetCursor are NOT
- always called in sync with the actual monitor vertical retrace. I will
- be
- working on this; in the mean time, it's just a SMALL flicker, more
- noticeable
- on machines with nice big 16" screens.
-
- o Okay, here's the scoop: SetCursor DOES NOT MOVE MEMORY under these
- conditions. SetCCursor MIGHT, however. Nobody at Apple was willing to
- try
- and put a color example into the new Inside Macintosh line of books, so
- I
- thought OK, I will. According to someone who sounds like they know, the
- color cursor call has a 0.1% chance of failing. I say, Hell... I lock
- everything and do the best job I can of keeping things from moving. I
- guess
- with something as sick as a VBL, anything can happen; but I say it's
- safe.
-
- If you have any comments, questions, or suggestions, please feel free to
- send me mail personally (no, you don't have to voice your opinions over the

- Subject: Apple marketing in Europe ... (C)
-
- Eric Eisenhandler writes in Mac-Info Digest V10 #219:
- ---------
- Recently there has beeen a string of complaints about Apple's European
- prices in INFO-MAC. In no. 217, Michael Eytan points out that it isn't
- just Apple who are ripping off European customers by charging roughly
- twice the US prices - he gives an example of software.
- ...[deleted]
- ----------
-
- Unfortunately prices of software are not multiplied by TWO but much, much
- more.
- Let me give another recent example: some time ago I saw an advertisement in
- the journal 'Neural Networks' for a somewhat watered-down version of a neural-
- net soft called 'Professional II' that was offered at $100. I sent in the
- offer
- with a payment via my credit card. Yesterday I got a phone call from the
- French subsidiary, offering the same soft for 1990FF, VAT not included -- ie
- for 2360FF with taxes ($492), viz FIVE times the US price!!! This cannot,
- imho go on like this.
-
- My point in this posting however is *not* to complain, but to try to get
- all European Mac users on this list to get together and try to do something:
- address the European Commission or the European Parliament and/or write to
- professional journals. Of course, this may sound naive since the interests
- of the european computer industry is that US soft should be expensive. But
- I am open to any suggestion and willing to take on the role of a
- clearing-house
- To parody a former slogan: 'mac-proletarians of Europe unite'.
-
- Please send me mail privately at address below. Thanks

-
- Well, it just goes to show that there can be TOO much information
- for a person. I have so many Mac info sources now that it is getting
- hard to remember where I saw what.
-
- I did find the info on becoming a Authorized Apple Technician (Weenie
- ;-). It was not in the digest as I orignally thought. It is in the
- latest MacWorld (I actually find a few useful things in there every once
- and a while). It is "How To/Quick Tips" section.
-
- For those of you who expressed interest, here is a brief summary:
-
- Apple has a program called the Dealer Sponsored Servicing Owner
- program. Basically a dealer "sponsers" you for the enrollment
- in the MANDATORY Apple "certified" training class, sells you the
- service parts & modules, and answers any technical-service questions
- (I don't know about other dealers, but I tend to know more about
- Macs the the majority of the people at my dealer; OK, well, at least
- as far as sales people go :-). More info you should ask your dealer
- for a DSSO Product sheet, which they can get from the local Apple
- customer service manager. If you own or manage more than 100 Macs
- (Bummer, not rich enough for that yet ;-) , you can apply for the
- DSSO program at a local Apple Sales office (1-800-767-2275 for the
- closest sales office).
-
- I hope some others find this of use. I don't know if there are any
- costs associated with this, such as cost of the class, etc. I am
- going to look in to it 'cause it would be nice to be able to crack
- the Mac w/o worrying about the warranty (but then my IIsi is out of
- warranty any ways!).

- Subject: Change in kind of file for MS Word files
-
- This is a weird one that we here haven't been able to figure out, so we're
- throwing ourselves on the mercy of the Digest.
- We're running a lab with two Mac IIx's, one of which is the file server for a
- network of 18 machines (16 Mac Pluses and the Mac IIx's), the other is the
- only
- machine running System 7 (the others run 6.0.7). We installed Sys7 over the
- summer.
- Recently we've noticed that on the Mac running Sys7 all of the MS Word (4.0d)
- files show up on the menus as "Apple Share Update" files. When you check "Get
- Info" for any of these files, the kind is listed as "Apple Share Updater
- README
- Doc."
- This affects only Word files, files created in other applications are not
- affected. Also, the Word files appear normally on menus on the non-Sys7 Macs
- as
- well as in Get Info.
- We've run Disk First Aid on the internal hard drive, found nothing. Ran Norton
- Utilities, it found bad bundle bits and invalid dates in the Finder and
- allegedly fixed them. When we checked the files after running Norton, the
- problem was NOT fixed.
- We have rebuilt the desktop and reinstalled the system, to no avail. We have
- checked for viruses using the latest versions of Disinfectant and Gatekeeper,
- and both found nothing.
- I can't think of anything, but that means nothing as I am only a lowly grad
- assistant who had never even seen a Mac until 18 months ago. More to the
- point,
- my boss, the lab supervisor, is at a loss too.
- So the obvious questions are:
- 1) What is the problem?
- 2) How can we fix it?
- 3) What is the potential for serious damage?
- If you prefer, e-mail me directly and I'll post the results to the digest.
- Thank you very much for any help.

- "For those of us who refill ink jet cartridges, clogged jets are a recurring
- problem. Clogging is most common in cartridges that have not been used for a
- while. The cure: Fill the bottom of you ink-bottle cap, or any shallow
- vessel, with ink (Skrip brand has worked best for me) and place the jet end
- of the cartridge into the pool of ink. After soaking a half hour or so, the
- cartridge should be fine. This technique has kept my three cartridges alive

-
- I'll bet you don't have DA Handler installed in your System Folder. That's
- needed to assign memory to your DA's in system 6.0.x under Multifinder.
- It's on one of your System 6 installation disks. Alternatively you can hold

-
- >Does anyone know if it is some way possible to modify the keyboard layout of
- >GreekKeys in order to make it conformant to the TLG transcription?
- >I think of two ways: hacking the software; getting a new layout from SMK.
-
- Two other ways:
-
- 1) Get QuicKeys, a commercial macro utility from CE Software. It allows you
- to define an alias for any key that you type. So you can define "q" to be
- the keystroke that produces "theta" in SMK, and so forth. You can toggle
- QuicKeys on and off by a simple keystroke as well, so the changes you make
- can be turned off easily even within the program that you're using it for.
- The whole procedure would take only two or three minutes. QuicKeys costs
- about $100, and has so many other useful features that I'd urge everyone to
- get it.
-
- 2) Get FontMonger by Ares Software or some similar font editor. You can
- simply rearrange the actual GreekKeys font to match the TLG transcription.

- For those interested, there is a product that can be used to customize your

- won't create any new characters, but you can access some by typing one

- If you've suddenly found yourself having trouble getting your
- customized command keys in Nisus to be recognized, it may be that you have
- more than 28 items in your Menu Items folder in your System 7 folder.
- The solution, according to Vol.1 #1 of Nisus Software News, is to
- move the Menu Items folder out of the System Folder, assign your
- command key equivalent, then move the MI folder back in. Incidentally,
- customized command keys are one of the small features that's so
- well implemented I couldn't bear to give it up, and so abandoned
- thoughts of FrameMaker. You can even assign 2 letters to the key,
- since Nisus can tell the difference btw command-S (Save) and command-
- SA (Save As...) so long as you don't pause between the S and the A.
-
- Nisus Software has also announced that it is now shipping Nisus Compact
- with the spell checker and other modules. If you bought NC without

- The consensus was that it was much easier to open and install RAM in a PB100
- than either a PB140 or PB170 (and, we'll assume, the newer PB's). It also void
- the warranty, but, as several pointed out, if you're careful, there should be
- no problems. Others mentioned that since a dealer will only charge $25 or so
- it
- might be best to let them do it (which I might... but I doubt it).
-
- I was also told that Citibank was either out of PB100's or nearly so. I

- Several people recommended AutoDoubler, and a few suggested Aladdin's

- time using the disk (obviously), which contributes to battery drainage much

-
- With the upgrade to system 7 on the network here a problem arose - the name on
- the cover sheet, by which user can identify their own work when they go to
- collect it from the bookshop, is taken from the Machine Name. This is fine for
- machines used by one person only, but ours are public access, and it's less

- the cover page? The name would default to the whatever has been specified in
- Network SetUp. Personally, I think this would solve a lot of problems with
- "lost" output.
-
- Just an idea. The question is, how feasible is it, and has anyone done it?
- Does
- anyone feel like doing it? I must admit that I wouldn't know how to start.

- The other drawback is that you only get a single "chime" on the hour.
- I've got nice sounds for a cuckoo clock, china clock, and Big Ben.
- SuperClock bongs the time, but can be a bother at noon since it hogs the

- The info wasn't in my SE/30 manual. Might not be in the ci manual either.
- The 3 amp limit only applies to the +12V supply; the +5v supply has a
