- Subject: "Problems" with startup Icons (A)
-
- In 10-215, Fergus J. Lalor muses about the odd way start-up icons appear on
- screen in his spanking new Quadra--they sure didn't appear in such a crazed
- fashion in his old IIsi.
-
- Fergus is using System 7.0.1 on his Quadra because he has to do so. I
- suspect he was using System 6.0.x on his IIsi. Anyway, the difference comes
- about through the difference in Systems, not because of any hardware
- change. There are actually three (count 'em--3) different spots that System
- 7 displays icons from. First the Extensions load, then the Control Panels,
- then whatever is remaining in the System root itself (to ensure
- compatibility with older inits and software that isn't smart enough to look
- in the Extensions or CP folders for stuff--like the Prodigy software, which
- can't print because it knows nothing about looking for a printer driver in
- the Extensions Folder). Within each of those loading sequences, the order
- of loading is alphabetical.
-
- Playing with the loading orders by renaming the inits and moving them to
- the "wrong" folder is a pleasant way of spending a dull afternoon. It can
- also cure many conflicts and is always worth a try if you starting crashing
- or freezing after installing a new init. The sumex utility Init Wrap 1.2
- is very handy in getting those icons displayed properly. One of my friends
- has more than 50 inits installed and has been trying to teach them to dance
- the lambada across the screen on startup. (The lambada, of course, is The
- Forbidden Dance of Love.)
-
- >(v) Why am I more interested in this problem than in all the tasks I "should"
- >be doing on my Mac? (OK, you don't need to answer that one).
-
- For the same reason that I am spending time answering your question rather
- than doing what I "should" be doing on my OWN Mac!

- Yes (he/she) does have a real name and it is WAXMAN - is there somehting
- wrong with this? <grin>
-
- Anyway, this WAS my second posting on this topic, and the response was great.
- Thanks to the people who replied, the upgrade is working faithfully.
-
- As for your comments, I tend to disagree. Having never opened or performed
- work on the inside of a Mac before, this upgrade was extremely easy to
- install. I am appalled by the fact that Apple "requires" you have an
- authorized technician install this upgrade. I am an avid Mac fan, but they
- need to open their doors some to expandability - as much as I hate to say it,
- this sort of upgrade has been performed by PC users for years.
-
- The installation requires the replacement of 4 ROM chips (can be done with a
- regular screwdriver) and 1 socketed IC (need some sort of tool to pop the IC
- out of the socket - I used a soldering tool). Total time - maybe five
- minutes.
-
- The next question logically, is why did I have problems? My first problem
- was the correct placment of the 4 ROM chips. Without the tech documentation
- >From Apple, I had to take a guess. My first guess was wrong and the machine
- did not boot. A quick switch of the chips and my next guess was better
- - the machine booted.
-
- The other "problem" I had was that I had overlooked the socketed IC - it is
- only about .25" square as was not listed on the Apple parts list. After I
- found and installed this chip, everything worked as advertised.
-
- Once again, thanks for all of the replies from everyone and Alan - if
- you ever need someone to install an FDHD upgrade - drop me a note, I'm only
- an hour and half away from you. 8 )

- I would like to add some sound to animations I am creating in both Stratavison

- 3D and also Cinemation. My problem is that Adobe Premiere is forcing movies to
- be sized in 1 aspect ratio. I know I can reshape the winodw in MoviePlayer,

-
- I had the same problem. It's a case of a badly-worded error
- message. What you need to do is this: Go into the Chooser, turn
- AppleTalk on, and reboot. With the new TuneUp, if AppleTalk is off,
- its code is not loaded at startup (thereby saving room). This,
- however, does not mesh well with ARA.
-
- If you are not on a local AppleTalk network (i.e. one connected to
- your printer port), you will probably also want to go into the
- Network control panel and select "Remote Only" so that you can still
- use your printer port for other things, too.
-
- Hope this helps!

- Subject: Connecting from the Boonies [A]
-
- In 10-215, Pat Pruyne asks for help connecting someone in the 413 area code
- in MA to the net for minimal cost.
-
- I've gone through the various lists of connection methods and agree that
- there's no site reachable by a local phone call. The fellow can hook up
- through The World or through Merit, but these would involve either calls to
- Boston (closest) or using something like the CompuServe network to handle
- the phone calls, adding $4-5.60 per hour to the costs. Since the guy ran up
- hundreds of dollars in fees to AOL (which charges about $6 per hour), such
- a connection wouldn't save much money.
-
- I'd suggest...oh, stop all that groaning. You know what I'm going to
- suggest. I've suggested it a hundred times before. But the answer is still
- the right one.
-
- Call MCIMail at 1-800-444-6245. Sign up for a mailbox at the rate of $35.00
- PER YEAR. You will only have a mail link to the net, granted, but there's
- very little that can't be done through the mail link. (Check the other
- offers at $10 per month or $5 per month for students--they might be better
- choices for the guy.) MCIMail offers UNLIMITED receipt of Internet mail.
- You get your Internet mail or files by, say, using a z-modem download at
- 9600 baud or 2400 baud, by dialing a toll-free 800 number which will work
- for the Boonies. There is no connect time, no storage charge, no phone
- cost. Result: you need not pay more than that basic dime a day--and you can
- subscribe to any list handled by a listserv.
-
- How do you get files? Request them from ftpmail@decwrl.dec.com or from the
- new BART server at the University of Michigan (I suspect there'll be an
- announcement in this issue of that) or from the listserv at Rice. Info on
- all of these is readily available. Even the largest file can be retrieved
- in that fashion. Send them to your box at MCIMail.com and download them. No
- problem. (I'd suggest sending the request for such files through AOL,
- making sure to specify that the files are to be mailed to the MCIMail.com
- box. That's cheaper than sending the request from MCIMail itself. Dec and
- BART allow such redirection; Rice does not.)
-
- What about telnet and Usenet news? You'd have to go to the commercial
- suppliers for that--but those services weren't what ran up those hundreds
- of dollars in billings on AOL. The best list for locating such suppliers is
- available by anonymous ftp at liberty.uc.wlu.edu, filed as:
- /pub/lawlib/internet.access

- You will probably receive many replies recommending Soundmaster,
- but I'd like to suggest you try SndControl.
- SndControl is hidden inside of
- info-mac/sound/program/sound-manager-package-175.hqx
- Unlike SoundMaster, SndControl does not keep all your sounds in
- RAM (unless you specify in the control panel that it should).
- Even if you attach relatively small sounds to a dozen Finder
- actions, it can easily add up to half a meg or more. Hardly
- makes sense to keep your shutdown sound sitting in RAM all day,
- does it?
- The Sound manager package includes Sound Mover, a Font/DA type
- utility that converts almost any kind of sound file into a sound
- suitcase or a System 7 double-clickable sound file. Sort of a
- GIFConverter for sounds.

- paranoid - because I will not send my mac IIsi throught
- the airport x-ray scanner. Because of my fear, I wind up
- setting up the entire system showing that it is not a bomb
- (although I fear at times that if the bomb icon ever came up
- on the screen I would be arrested) and having to take it apart
- and put it back into the bags. This takes me usually about 5-10 minutes
- but, I really would like to not have to do this.
-
- 1. Can anyone tell me if it is safe to put my mac and external HD throught
- the x-ray's at the airport - I was warned never to do it at Laquardia or
- Kennedy
- 2. Is it safe to put the monitro throught the x-ray.
-
- 3. Are there different x-ray beams that are used at airports or is it
- different intensities of the same type of beam.
-
- I will post all responses made to me (cdclark@indsvax1.indstate.edu)
-
- I will be flying quite a bit in the next month or two and really could
- use some good responses to my questions.
-
- Lastly, please don't tell me to go get a powerbook -- I am a student and
- have a very tight budget. Thanks in advance for setting aside my phobias

-
- I tried to print a MS-Word 5.0 document which includes formulas generated
- by the formula editor (1.0a) supplied by Microsoft. I was not able to
- print the document on the NEC Silentwriter 2 S60P.
-
- The Mac said: "the document is okay"; the printer said: the document
- contains wrong postscript code.
-
- I am using System 6.0.7. Do I have to upgrade to System 7 in order to
- print formulas?
-
- I also tried generate a Postscript file and print it Unix Postscript
- printers. However, I had to use a German System File which included
- changed control commands; Ctl-F was renamed into some other, undocumented
- control command combination. The changed combination was not available. Is
- this typical for Apple that it changes most of the control command
- combinations when the US-Version is transformed into other
- Language-Versions?

-
- Yup, I was just plain wrong. That'll teach me to answer things based
- on theory rather than on practice. If the QT compressors don't do
- a good job, then there's room for AD to compress more. I didn't know
- that that was a possibility with QT. :-)

- I wish, Jeff. :-)
-
- No, this points out why I made the mistake originally. In theory,
- all QT movies should be tightly compressed, as this one apparently
- is. Bill Lipa and others have informed me that this theory is unfortunately
- not backed up by reality, thus AutoDoubler may be of some use with
- some QT movies.

-
- I have the following problem on a Mac IIci running system 7 with
- tune-up 1.1.1.
- Double-clicking on an application's icon causes it to load, but its
- window stays in the background. The window can ba activated by clicking in
- it,
- or by a further double-click on the application.
- I have various extensions (PopChar, Apollo, Mac TCP..) and I am
- progressively removing this in case the problem is here. However, this is a
- lengthy process and I just wondered if some net guru had an idea of what was
- going on.
