- Subject: 800K System 7 startup disk for safe shutdowns
-
- I submitted this tip a couple of weeks ago and got some replies that made
- me realize I should clarify/correct a couple of things...
-
- To avoid Desktop rebuilding when using the System 7.0 800k Disk Tools disk
- (which uses a System 6.0.7 System file and Finder), make an 800k emergency
- startup disk using only a minimal System 7 System file and Disk First Aid
- instead of a Finder. On a Mac running System 6 use "Set Startup" in the
- Special menu to set the startup application for the floppy as Disk First
- Aid. Finally, lock the disk! (System 7 will "un-bless" a floppy without a
- Finder)
-
- When selecting "Quit" from the File menu after running Disk First Aid the
- Mac will shut down properly with an "It's okay to switch off your
- Macintosh now" screen.

- In response to a recently posted question, I use MacEKG regularly. I

- It is most helpful for:
-
- 1. Showing me the effect of adding all those "got to have them"
- extensions and controls panels. If I've added a processor
- intensive goodie, MacEKG will show it when I run a before
- and after installation test.
-
- 2. Keeping a watch over the ageing of my Mac. My machine (a
- IIsi) is still fairly new. Like most things, it can slow
- down (somewhat) over time. MacEKG provides a histogram
- that shows me general trends in my machine.
-
- 3. Checking on my Jasmine DD 45. My external Jasmine hard drive
- has been a faithful performer, but he is begining to show
- his age. (He'll be five this November). MacEKG shows me
- stickion problems and keeps general tabs of the access performance
- of the drive. This won't help me avoid that day (real soon now)
- when the drive drops dead, but it does give me some confidence
- as to how its doing that day.

-
- If you are on a B&W Mac (plus, SE, Classic, etc.) you're right, there is no
- use. However, on a color system here's how I use them.
- Lt Blue = Data file
- Dk Blue = File Folder
- Purple = System Extesion
- Green = Appl. Preference File
- Red = Application
-
- Remember, you can change the color and name of each label under control
- panels
-
- This allows you to color code your icons by type without having to view by
- kind. There is still the problem of constantly updating your icons. Each
- time you create a file you have to remember to go back and color code it
- because the mac defaults to black. The feature would have been more useful
- if when the user defined what the labels would be used for (in my case, file
- types) the system could automatically assign these labels/colors (in my case,
- by file type).

- I have a problem with my Mac Plus's PRAM; for the last month or so the
- PRAM has gotten messed up periodically, though I can't find any pattern.
-
- 1) The battery is new and has been tested with a voltmeter.
-
- 2) Various parts of the PRAM get messed up at different times - sometimes
- the clock/date, sometimes just the mouse and/or the sound.
-
- 3) When the clock/date get messed up, they don't reset to 1904 (or
- whatever the default is), they go back to the 30's, 40's, etc. Once
- the date changed to the future.
-
- Things will be fine for days or a week at a time and then get screwy for a
- few days on end. When a problem occurs, I zap the PRAM (command-option-P-R
- on start w/Sys 7 or command-option when selecting Control Panel w/Sys 6)
- and it holds for a little while.
-
- I have a Plus with 2.5 megs RAM and a 40 meg HD. I run the HD with System
- 7.0 (w/1.1.1) (it's possible!) and run sometimes on floppies only using
- System 6.0.7 (I do this so I can telecommunicate/play games in silence).
- The problems have occurred during periods where I've ONLY run the Plus one
- way or the other (HD or floppies), so this doesn't seem to be contributing
- to the problem.

- Hello Netters
- Boy am i having some strange problems with my APS Hard Disk. It started

- apollo .84b, win, Disinfectant init, DAL, AppleShare, RWindowWizard
- (just got that one), NoBalloon Menu, and some , mouse2) in the middle of the
- rebuild (right at the end) it crashed and entered macsbugs. So I restarted
- and did not worry. Well this happened again during a desktop rebuild.
- Then i lost my disk Icon (generic document) My 105 is partioned into
- 5 smaller partions, and I lost the Icon for my primary partion (not the
- system file containing partion). Well i checked this out with Mactools
- and it said that the Record Key in the catalog file was Bad and that
- Disk First Aid might be able to fix it. If that did not work (which it
- did not). I was to backup the HD and reformat. So I did this. Now
- in less than 3 days, I had problems getting the Pation to mount,
- lost some icons, and Mactools says it is the record Key in the catalog
- file again.
- Does anyone know of a way to fix this?
- What can cause this?
- Is it WindowWizard?
- Could it have anything to do with copying shared files from work to my HD
- at home? I noticed when i was playing around with Resedit that these
- shared files still had the "Shared" bit checked even thought they were
- no longer shared.I really do not want to rebuild again. That took me Hours
- to restore the 5 partions.
-
- Any suggestions? I would appreciate any pointers. Is there a commercial
- repair app that will repair this file, without having to rebuild and format.

- Subject: Question to Mac network managers???
-
- Hello there,
- I'm a Mac network manager (up to 20 Macs). Actually, the Mac server is really
- to slow (the server itself is a MacPlus).
- We will change it. We want to buy a Mac Quadra 950 to do the work. It has to
- share the files (with AppleShare 3.0), be a fax-modem server, and be a remote
- Oracle server (we will connect to a Sun through it via Ethernet).
- Does anybody of you havesuch a configuration ?
- Is a Mac Quadra 950 really justified, or a simple Mac IIci will be enough ?
- (Money is not a problem!).
- We need very fast access to disks and files (we use this very slow FileMaker
- Pro, and when 10 users are connected to the same file, accessing it is really
- not like a Porsche).
-
- Thanks for any help!
-
- Sincerely,
- Steve Jordi-Dpt of Geophysics-U of Geneva-Switzerland-jordi@sc2a.unige.ch

- Another quick way is to use Andrew Welch's ColorSwitch CP. Make sure the
- Finder is foremost, then change colour depth. The Finder will restart.
- Change it back, holding down command and option; the Finder will restart
- again and offer to rebuild the desktop.

-
- I'd like information on ResEditing the System 7 Finder.
-
- Specifically, I want to add:
-
- 1) a command key equivalent to the Help menu
-
- 2) bi-directional scroll arrows at each end of the scroll bar in a
- window (like Scroll2). I thought you could add/change scroll
- arrows fairly easily in System 6, how about 7?
-
- I'll post a summary of replies.
-
- Thanks.

-
- I wonder if anybody has come across a massive new adventure game called
- Rise of the Dragon, reviewed in the current issue of MacUser UK. I say
- "massive" because the reviewer claims it requires 9 Mb of hard disk space!
- The game is said to be almost cinematic in its implementation, with
- changing scenarios, animation and sound effects. The goal is apparently
- that you as hero are called upon by the mayor of some crime-ridden
- metropolis to track down the purveyors of a lethal drug.
- I'm normally quite blase when it comes to games, but I seem to have a soft
- spot for adventuring, and I thought Prince of Persia was terrific. If
- anybody has seen/played ROTD, send me your comments/reviews! An upload of
- a demo disk would be handy

- Howdy. I just tried connecting an FX to my old Jasmine DirectDrive 20

- Note3: I'm using an old Jasmine driver; could this be the problem? I
- tried calling Jasmine but I couldn't get a human to talk to.
- Note4: I'm don't have a SCSI terminator on the Jasmine; could this be

- I have compared both Stuffit Lite 3.0 and Compact Pro 1.33 regarding speed

-
- Two weeks ago, I would have written a nice, mild reply stating that
- the StyleWriter gave a bit higher quality images but was somewhat slower.
- Unfortunately, in the interim my StyleWriter has committed violent
- self-immolation. There was no advance warning -- I turned it on one day
- and it started making horrible grinding noises. My dealer tells me it
- requires a new "frame" (one of the 2 field-replaceable units) and that
- it will cost me $309 plus tax!!! This is for a printer which has always
- been treated well and is only two months out of warranty. Yikes!
-
- My appeal to Apple for warranty relief was turned down. In fact, the
- Apple customer Service Rep that I talked to even pointed out that it
- would be more cost-effective for me to buy a new StyleWriter than to
- repair the present one, since I would get a full one-year warranty.
-
- I suppose I should have read the fine print in the StyleWriter manual,
- you know, the one that says "Caution -- this unit cannot be repaired
- in a cost-effective manner if it breaks, and oh, yes, it is likely to
- break suddenly just after the warranty expires." :-(
-
- I suppose I should stop this self-serving whining, but this was my first
- really bad experience with Apple hardware, and I'm still trying to
- figure out what to do. Presently, I'm inclining strongly toward buying
- an HP DeskWriter.

- Subject: Summary - Think C
-
- Hi,
-
- Fist, thanks to every body that send me information about my request
- of a book for learning C programming language on Macintosh (Think C)
-
- A lot of people ask me to send them the results... It's more easy for
- me to send a summary to Info-mac, but if anyone have questions, he is
- welcome.
-
- First, the "Learn C on the Macintosh" is a good choice to learn the
- language itself, but not specific to Think C. Many people suggest me to
- begin with that.
-
- Second, "The Macintosh C Programmer Primer" will help to program using
- Think C and the Macintosh interface. From Mark and Read at ADDISON-WESLEY.
-
- Third, "The C programming language" from Kernighan and Ritchie is a good
- book too.
-
- After I know the C and the compiler Think C, some people suggest to get
- the new Inside Macintosh serie.
-
- I don't have much information about the book above, sorry. If I made
- mistakes in this summary, please correct me! 8-)
-
- Thanks again to every Info-Mac readers!!

- Dom-
- I think the problem you are having is that Appleshare doesn't accept
- your reordering of the desktop icons. Try "Clean up" & setting the
- view from the Appleshare server. At least, I think it's an Appleshare
- problem. And I think that you are using Appleshare, since you
- mentioned a shared hard drive & logging in/signing off. If I'm wrong,
- well, good luck anyway. ;)

- Subject: Where/when is MacWrite Pro?
-
- My Apple dealer recently mentioned that now would be a good time to buy
- MacWrite because it's not bad and anyway it would cost "almost nothing"
- to upgrade to MacWrite Pro if and when that eventually arrives. Has it
- been confirmed that upgrades to the ephemeral MWP will be very cheap, and
- what is the latest prognosis on MWP? Is there a general enquiry e-mail
- address at Claris US that I can write to?
- It's most disappointing that Claris has been keeping everybody waiting
- for MacWrite Pro for positively ages. Bearing in mind Apple's recent
- grovelling towards Microsoft, my only reaction is that surely Apple
- wouldn't have to be that dependent on Microsoft if only Claris could get
- its act together a bit better, and perhaps expand if needed, so that they
- can keep producing the solid and comprehensive Mac software that we all
- know they're capable of. After all, exporting and importing documents
- amongst applications from different software houses is a relatively easy
- problem to sort out, so if that's done and Claris can deliver the goods
- in terms of its own packages, would it really then matter if Microsoft
- decided to wind down its Mac efforts in favour of Windows? Claris'
- efforts gained a foothold for the Mac at the outset, so why are we now in
- some ways in thrall to another software house with its own unfriendly
- GUI to push? It doesn't make sense
