- The 3/9-chip SIMM story is as follows:
-
- The first 4Mbit chips had a JEDEC test mode which could be accidential
- entered when used in a system designed only for the 1Mbit chips. Due
- to this the first 3-chippers failed in some machines.
-
- Later the 4Mbits have been remade without the JEDEC test mode, and
- these should have no problems in 1Mbit systems. The JEDEC test mode is
- of no use for the end user, so the safest way is to always go for
- non-JEDEC chips. (Both are in current production.)
-
- This gives the possibility for designing for 4Mbit as for 1Mbit
- (without JEDEC test mode), and the problems will reapear as we start
- to move on to 16Mbit in a few months.
