  24. The 3/9-chip SIMM story is as follows:

  26. The first 4Mbit chips had a JEDEC test mode which could be accidential
  27. entered when used in a system designed only for the 1Mbit chips. Due
  28. to this the first 3-chippers failed in some machines.
  29.  
  30. Later the 4Mbits have been remade without the JEDEC test mode, and
  31. these should have no problems in 1Mbit systems. The JEDEC test mode is
  32. of no use for the end user, so the safest way is to always go for
  33. non-JEDEC chips. (Both are in current production.)
  34.  
  35. This gives the possibility for designing for 4Mbit as for 1Mbit
  36. (without JEDEC test mode), and the problems will reapear as we start
  37. to move on to 16Mbit in a few months.
