- Hi,
- I have a fairly interesting problem with an upgrade I'm preforming
- on a 286. I have a XT that now has a 286 motherboard running at 16MHz.
- I'm still using the MFM HardDrive and card that's in the system. But the
- problem is with the Floppy Drive. I have purchased a AT FD/HD CTRLr to use
- with the current drive in the system. The drive is a 5.25" 360k 1/4 height
- drive. The problem is that I keep getting a FDD error on startup. Why? What
- would cuase such an error? I have disabled the IDE port of the CTRLr and
- set the CMOS to no HD installed. I have even pulled the card from the system!
- I belive the problem stems from the drive itself. The drive has some Switches
- on it. Could it be a setting? The drive is a Okidata GM 3315BU. Here is a map
- of the switches:
- T D D D D | This drive appearently worked with the original
- E S S S S | XT board and FD card. Also I am attempting to
- R M H H | set this drive as Drive A, so wouldn't the DS 0
- M 0 1 2 3 X S M | switch need to be on instead of the DS 1? I can't
- |________________ seem to remember which of the
- 0 0 1 0 0 0 0 1 | 0=OFF 1=ON | connections on the ribbon cable
-
- I should be using for drive A, Is it the one on the end or the middle one?
- I've only done this once or twice on my system... And all I had to do is
- plug the card, plug the drive, and set the Cmos... Why am I having so much
- problems?
- Also I will be attempting to use the old MFM CTRLr and MFM drive as
- the hardDrive in the system! I realize that I cannot use the CMOS setup to
- reconize it, but If/When I get the Dos prompt, I use DEBUG to call:
- -g C8000 or something simular... can you direct me?
-
- I really need YOUR help! Send me ANY info you can think of. I can use it.
- The really funny thing is that I built my AT from the ground up, but I can't
- remember exactly what I did... Too many EE classes between then and now!
-
- E-mail your response ASAP.
- And Thanks!
