- No current parallel ports were designed to run bidirectionally. They have 4
- bits of status coming back from the printer (error, paper out, online, and
- something else). Schemes like your tape backup unit communicate a nibble at
- a time using these status bits.

- There are a couple of groups now working on bi-directional parallel port
- specifications, but I don't think these have been realized in available
- products.
