  55. No current parallel ports were designed to run bidirectionally.  They have 4 
  56. bits of status coming back from the printer (error, paper out, online, and 
  57. something else).  Schemes like your tape backup unit communicate a nibble at 
  58. a time using these status bits.

  60. There are a couple of groups now working on bi-directional parallel port 
  61. specifications, but I don't think these have been realized in available 
  62. products.
