- The software is entirely equivalent, although the disks and manuals they
- supply have "Gateway" labels and covers. Gateway has arranged for site
- licenses of the software, and is allowed to freely distribute this software
- to their customers. But Gateway is the registered owner of the software, not
- you. This has two effects: first, you will not get upgrade notices from the
- vendor. Gateway told me that they would send me upgrade offers, possibly at
- a lower price than the original software vendor. (This remains to be seen.)
- Second, although you can legally sell this software to someone else (by
- removing the software from your machine and giving the buyer the original
- disks and manuals), you cannot guarantee the buyer that they will receive
- upgrade notices.
