- I have a problem that I hope can be solved by all you experts out there.
- I purchased a Fujistu 520MB, 3.5" IDE disk and installed it in my 486-50
- system. It functions perfectly except that I hear a high-pitched sound coming
- from the drive when it is spinning. It sounds a lot like the noise some
- monitors make when they are on but the system in off. It's so high that
- some people can't even hear it. As you might imagine, it's quite annoying.
- Anyway, I took the disk back and tried another Fujistu with similar results;
- the noise was not as bad but was still there. Then, I tried a Maxtor of
- similar capacity and it made the noise too. I then thought that maybe it was
- the power supply making the noise, so I changed that and the noise remained.
-
- I'm really at a loss to understand what's happening. I find it hard to
- believe that both Fujistu and Maxtor have this same problem but I don't
- know what else to think. It seems clear to me that the noise is coming from
- the drive since it goes away when I unplug the disk's power cable. Am I
- the only person in the world that can hear this? Have I been eating too much
- cheese :-)?
-
- Has anyone out there had a similar experience? Please help!
-
- Thanks
- Dan
