- I'm not complaining, just stating a fact. Yes, I got the standard
- Micronics 25/33 cache motherboard with 4 MB (max 16 MB with ASIC memory
- card that wasn't cheap) of 80 ns RAM, 64K of 30 (or is it 35?) ns cache,
- and Phoenix BIOS. The one that the sales rep bragged about had an AMI
- motherboard, 4 MB of 70 ns RAM (max 32 MB on motherboard, 64 MB with
- memory card), 64K of 25 ns cache. At the time, my mouth was watering
- over the specs (I was a student that had long outgrown his 4.7 mhz
- 8088). I got smart and asked to confirm the components, at which time
- I was disappointed to find out it wasn't anything like I had anticipated.
- It's just the idea that the company shipped out a review unit that
- wasn't representative of their product line. I know other companies
- do the same, but it makes me question their honesty when they try to
- trick consumers with good reviews. Now that I think about it, though,
- maybe they changed suppliers shortly after that. Who knows?
-
- It's a good thing I went with the Gateway, though. The other choice
- was Touche, and I don't see them advertising anymore. :-)
-
- The experience taught me a lot about mail order, and I have since gotten
- pretty good with mail order purchasing (what questions to ask, what to
- expect, current market prices, etc). I usually recommend Gateway
- computers to first-time buyers that need the security blanket that an
- established company can offer, while I shop a few bargain-basement
- companies (established ones) for my own stuff.
