  23. The modem doesn't receive and respond to that string.  It sends it
  24. when it detects loss of carrier.  Moreover, as has been pointed out,
  25. it sends it mainly for the benefit of the user, as the terminal
  26. emulation software should be detecting a hardware indication of the
  27. carrier which is also sent by the modem.

  29. If that string causes problems, the software is at fault.
