- The modem doesn't receive and respond to that string. It sends it
- when it detects loss of carrier. Moreover, as has been pointed out,
- it sends it mainly for the benefit of the user, as the terminal
- emulation software should be detecting a hardware indication of the
- carrier which is also sent by the modem.
