- The question of what HP should provide as part of their standard OS
- distribution is probably going to have more than one answer depending
- on how many people you ask. It seems obvious that HP is in the business
- of making money, and most often takes the course of trying to please the
- users with the most money. The users, in turn, pay their money for
- technology they need to do their own work. When it works right, it is
- a symbiotic relationship.
-
- In my dealings with HP personnel (and Apollo personnel before that), it
- also seems clear that they look to the "user community" for expressions
- of common interest. If enough users can voice a common concern, it may
- be viewed in the corporate interest to listen (and allocate rescoures,
- etc.) to address the problem.
-
- On a good day, posting msgs to comp.sys.hp may reach some of the relevant
- people at HP. If those HP people perceive that the issue affects a critical
- number of users, something may get done, although you aren't likely to see
- any commitments made. If USENET was all we had, I think we should consider
- how to be more organized in presenting a unified voice (this has been done
- effectively on comp.sys.apollo). As an alternative, user groups (either
- general or special interest) can act effectively in an advocacy role.
-
- In New Orleans, the issue of X11 distribution by HP received considerable
- attention in the InterWorks "engineering directions" session, which also
- addressed many other user issues. The user complaints/suggestions made in
- this session are turned over to a specific group of people within HP who
- are chartered to deal with them. The history of this interaction between
- InterWorks and HP/APOLLO indicates that HP takes the output from the
- massed users seriously. Solutions of some form are almost universally
- made available in due course..
