-
- The main point, IMHO, is that there is a large base of freely
- distributable applications "out there" which work fine on hpux
- machines, but which, because of the lack of certain key utilities, are
- painful to build on a virgin hpux system. Those of us who really want
- this stuff now have to go out and get the MIT sources and build them on
- our systems to create the proper environment for building such
- applications.
-
- This is more difficult than it needs to be. HP could provide most of
- the missing parts of the MIT distribution with little pain. The main
- problem from hp's point of view seems to be the fear that customers
- will start to ask for support services on such software. This
- justification ranges from the silly (lack of imake) to legitimate
- concerns (lack of Xmu).
-
- One must wonder why the missing part cannot be supplied as unsupported
- contrib software, much in the manner of the Interviews package, which
- is provided, but not supported, on the C++ tape.
-
- The support provided now by corvalis via anonymous ftp service is a
- step in the right direction, and an indication that some people in that
- division recognize the problem, but still not a real solution to the
- problem.
