- Hi All,
-
- Today we discovered that the disk cache in the kernel of HPUX on a cluster
- of 9000/700 series and on a cluster of 9000/400 series does *NOT* function.
- We had noticed very bad disk I/O performance after we installed the cluster
- but never paid any attention the the possible cause of that.
-
- However when we compared a cluster of four 9000/710s running 8.07, configured
- as one server and three diskless clients, with a standalone 9000/710 also
- running 8.07, using Glance, it showed that the standalone machine used its
- disk cache while reading a large file (2M) subsequently and that any machine
- - even the server - in the cluster did NOT use its disk cache (if it had
- one to begin with...) while reading a large file (2M) subsequently.
-
- Glance reported in the standalone case the first time the file was read,
- 2M read logical and 2M read fysical and subsequently reading the file, 2M
- read logical and zero read fysical.
- In the cluster configuration however Glance reported the first time the file
- was read, 2M read logical and 2M read fysical and subsequently EVERY time
- the file was read 2M logical and 2M fysical.
-
- So every command as simple as "ls" has to be read from the disk every time
- it is executed!
-
- A disk without a disk cache is not a very good idea. Neither is a diskless
- machine without a local cache to store blocks which are read via ethernet.
-
- Is this a HPUX feature???
- Can a disk cache be enabled on HPUX in a cluster environment?
- And what does the kernel do with the many Mbytes of memory allocated for
- itself if it doesn't use that as disk cache?
-
- Comments anyone?
- John-Paul.
