  20. I have a similar problem.   I have several HP 720 running 8.07 mounting
  21. a Sun 4/470's /var/spool/mail as /usr/mail.    This SUN is also the 
  22. NIS server for all these machines.    Mail worked fine for months.
  23. The problem started occuring recently.   From time to time, I will get the
  24. "lock not creatable after 10 tries" message during login, as root or as a
  25. regular user.   The problem is INCONSISTENT.   Sometimes it happens only as
  26. a normal user, sometimes only on certain machines.   Even worse, sometimes 
  27. the login will completely hang.  Yet I can start another login session with no
  28. problem and 'ps' indicates the hung login was at 'mail -e'.  I also notice
  29. that the lock file is created with no permission bits set.

  31. Anyone have any ideas?   I saw someone posted suggestions to replace 
  32. /bin/mail.   But what is the cause of this mysterious problem?
