  16. Many thanks to all the guys who tried to help us. I'll give a summary
  17. of the problem, its causes and the solution:
  18.  
  19. (1) The Korn Shell - embedded in HP-UX - is the only shell which locks
  20.     the history file (unlike the HP-UX Bourne and C Shell)
  21.  
  22. (2) The statd (usr/etc/rpc.statd) can die or refuse proper working
  23.     under some circumstances. In this case - which we have been
  24.     enjoying :-) - the lockd (/usr/etc/rpc.lockd) becomes 'sick', too.
  25.     The next stage is, that NFS does not work correctly (-> unkillable
  26.     processes)
  27.  
  28. (3) Coming up from the Korn Shell feature to lock the user's history
  29.     file (residing on a NFS mounted file system) the *whole* system
  30.     can become instable more and more ...
  31.  
  32. How do one realize the problem?
  33.  
  34. - User with NFS mounted history files (in most cases the history file
  35.   resides in the user's home directory - so you can say: NFS mounted
  36.   home directories) are not able to use the Korn Shell. If this is
  37.   their login shell, they even can't login.
  38.  
  39. - A process running a Korn Shell in the above context is not killable.
  40.   But you can reboot ...
  41.  
  42. - If the system is instable enough one w not be able to fork more
  43.   processes nor to make pipes - due to NFS problems, based on statd
  44.   problems.

  46. Workarounds, solutions:
  47.  
  48. - Make sure statd and lockd work properly: kill them and restart them
  49.  
  50. - HP offers patches for the statd, you'll get with them new version of
  51.   /usr/rtc/rpc.statd.
