- This is my first posting to this newsgroup so I hope this is appropriate.
-
- I am curious which operating systems DEC plans to put on which
- machines. I understand that the "alpha chip" will be able to run
- OSF/1, OpenVMS and Windows NT. What I want to know is will the same
- physical machine be capable of running any one of the three? In other
- words could I buy an alpha workstation, load OSF/1 on it and then later
- decide I would rather use that machine to run OpenVMS (ie. take off
- OSF/1 and load OpenVMS). Could I do the same for Windows NT? Would
- the peripherals, memory etc. be a problem? My understanding is that
- OSF/1 and OpenVMS will be interchangable but Windows NT may not be.
- I further understand that the Windows NT portability is a
- "marketing issue" which was still under consideration. I was also
- informed that I should voice my opinion to DEC...so here goes.
-
- I think it would be a very strong and positive strategic statement for
- DEC to have one box capable of running all THREE operating systems!
- What other workstation would be able to boast such flexibility?
- I am not interested in starting a flame war (especially at my own
- expense!) but am interested in other peoples views on this issue.
- I am especially interested in what DEC has to say.
-
- Thanks in advance to any input you can provide!
