- I had to hop into my 'way-back machine for this. 'Way back to 1986 in
- fact, when the 6526 was revised (primarily a process change) and became
- the 8521. Any MOS-6526 chips with a date code of "4486" or later are
- really 8521s, but the name change was apparently so confusing that the
- 6526 moniker was retained. The "A" to which you referred is a speed
- designation and not a revision number, though. If you look closely, you
- will see another number, "216A", beside the date code. If your 6526
- chip has this special number on it, it's really an 8521 in disguise.
-
- So much for name games- why doesn't it work? A relatively minor fix
- changed the timing of an IRQ generated by 6526 by one cycle (I forget
- whether it's 1 cycle earlier or later), and this broke DSI's copy
- protection scheme. DSI subsequently relaxed their protection, and
- quietly offered a disk exchange to folks who had problems with the
- earlier programs. I doubt this policy is still in effect, however.
-
- If you can't get an updated copy of your DSI program, see if you
- scavenge an older 6526 chip from an old C64. The keyboard 6526 (U1)
- is the one causing the DSI problem. Supposedly some Batteries Included
- programs were also affected, but I don't know which one(s).
-
- By the way- hi Frank, good to "see" you! I thought I lost you after
- nadc was wacked.
