  15. SITUATION:

  17. I've already got a HayesSmartmodem 2400 connected to an HPP in my
  18. AT&T 3B2/310. It's doing incoming and outgoing calls with no problem.
  19. Now I want to add a Telebit T1600 to the system and because of the
  20. higher baud rate, I'm using an EPORTS card. But I haven't been able
  21. to talk to the Telebit modem! Is there something special I need to do?

  23. WHAT I DID:
  24.  
  25. For the physical connection, I'm using an AT&T "black cable" and
  26. an ACU MODEM adapter.
  27.  
  28. Since the Telebit will only be dialing out, I made no changes
  29. to /etc/inittab.
  30.  
  31. In /usr/lib/uucp/Dialers, I decided to use the 'hayes' dialer:

  49. #   The ",M" subfield will cause the device to be opened with O_NDELAY set
  50. #   (so the open doesn't hang waiting for carrier).  After the open,
  51. #   O_NDELAY is cleared.  Then, in the dialer script, "\M" sets CLOCAL and
  52. #   "\m" clears it.  Typically, CLOCAL is set for the duration of the
  53. #   dialer chat, then cleared (so uucico and cu will detect dropped lines)
  54. #   once you're connected to the remote system.

  78. I thought there might be something about the way the T1600 was setup, so
  79. so I pulled it over to my trusty PC, and did an AT&F3 (as suggested by 
  80. Telebit technical support), and tried again.  Still no go.

  82. I changed some other parameters, and here's what the modem is set to now:

  99. All the hardware is fine. The Telebit has been in steady service 
  100. on my PC. I've tried different cables, connectors, using different ports 
  101. on the same EPORTS card; I replaced the EPORTS card with another one and
  102. have the same problem. I'm using a breakout box to watch the pins and
  103. compare the connection to that of the Hayes; there's no apparent
  104. difference.

  106. And since I'm able to talk to the Telebit at 2400 if I plug the Hayes'
  107. cable into it, I'm more inclined to think it's something with the 
  108. EPORTS board.

  110. I've got the HPP in slot 1, the EPORTS in slot 2, a CTC for my XM in
  111. slot 3 and slot 4 is empty.

  113. What have I missed?  If you've got a Telebit connected via EPORTS
  114. to your 3B2, I'd like to hear from you.  I'd appreciate any pertinent 
  115. info, or helpful hints.
