- SITUATION:
-
- I've already got a HayesSmartmodem 2400 connected to an HPP in my
- AT&T 3B2/310. It's doing incoming and outgoing calls with no problem.
- Now I want to add a Telebit T1600 to the system and because of the
- higher baud rate, I'm using an EPORTS card. But I haven't been able
- to talk to the Telebit modem! Is there something special I need to do?
-
- WHAT I DID:
-
- For the physical connection, I'm using an AT&T "black cable" and
- an ACU MODEM adapter.
-
- Since the Telebit will only be dialing out, I made no changes
- to /etc/inittab.
-
- In /usr/lib/uucp/Dialers, I decided to use the 'hayes' dialer:
-
- # Hayes Smartmodem -- new BNU modem control capabilities
- # If you do not want to strap CD on, use these switch settings:
- #
- #
- # S1 - UP S2 - UP S3 - DOWN S4 - UP
- # S5 - UP S6 - UP S7 - ? S8 - DOWN
- #
- # and this dialer entry (comment out the earlier one):
- #
- hayes =,-, "" \M\dAT\r\c OK\r \EATDT\T\r\c CONNECT \m\c
- #
- # Furthermore, you must add a ",M" subfield to the line field
- # (field 2) of the associated Devices file entries, as shown here:
- #
- # ACU culd0,M - 1200 hayes \T
- #
- # The ",M" subfield will cause the device to be opened with O_NDELAY set
- # (so the open doesn't hang waiting for carrier). After the open,
- # O_NDELAY is cleared. Then, in the dialer script, "\M" sets CLOCAL and
- # "\m" clears it. Typically, CLOCAL is set for the duration of the
- # dialer chat, then cleared (so uucico and cu will detect dropped lines)
- # once you're connected to the remote system.
-
- And I added these entries to /usr/lib/uucp/Devices:
- ACU tty28,M - 19200 hayes \T
- Direct tty28 - 19200 direct \T
-
- That should be it, right?
-
- WHAT IT DOES:
-
- For testing, I tried to talk to it "direct":
-
- # cu -d -ltty28
- altconn called
- Device Type Direct wanted
- getto ret -1
- Connect failed: CAN'T ACCESS DEVICE
- call cleanup(1)
- call _mode(0)
- #
-
- The EPORTS drivers are loaded:
- eports AT&T 3B2 Enhanced Ports Utilities Release 1
-
- I thought there might be something about the way the T1600 was setup, so
- so I pulled it over to my trusty PC, and did an AT&F3 (as suggested by
- Telebit technical support), and tried again. Still no go.
-
- I changed some other parameters, and here's what the modem is set to now:
-
- at&v
- T1600 - Version LA1.00 - Active Configuration
- B1 E1 L1 M1 P Q2 V1 X12 Y0
- &C2 &D3 &G0 &J0 &L0 &Q0 &R3 &S0 &T4 &X0
- S000=0 S001=0 S002=43 S003=13 S004=10 S005=8 S006=2 S007=40
- S008=2 S009=6 S010=14 S011=70 S012=50 S018=0 S025=5 S026=1
- S038=0 S041=0 S045=0 S046=0 S047=4 S048=0 S050=0 S051:254
- S056=17 S057=19 S058:0 S059=0 S060=0 S061:0 S062=15 S063=0
- S064:1 S068:3 S069=0 S090=0 S093=8 S094=1 S100=0 S102=0
- S104=0 S105=1 S111:30 S112=1 S180:3 S181=1 S183=25 S190=1
- S253=10 S254=255 S255=0
- OK
-
- ...and it still doesn't work.
-
- All the hardware is fine. The Telebit has been in steady service
- on my PC. I've tried different cables, connectors, using different ports
- on the same EPORTS card; I replaced the EPORTS card with another one and
- have the same problem. I'm using a breakout box to watch the pins and
- compare the connection to that of the Hayes; there's no apparent
- difference.
-
- And since I'm able to talk to the Telebit at 2400 if I plug the Hayes'
- cable into it, I'm more inclined to think it's something with the
- EPORTS board.
-
- I've got the HPP in slot 1, the EPORTS in slot 2, a CTC for my XM in
- slot 3 and slot 4 is empty.
-
- What have I missed? If you've got a Telebit connected via EPORTS
- to your 3B2, I'd like to hear from you. I'd appreciate any pertinent
- info, or helpful hints.
-
- Please e-mail, and I'll summarize if there's any interest.
-
- Thanks,
- Andy
