-
- i have just uploaded whatis v2.0.1 to atari.archive. the file is whatis201.zoo
- and is in ~ftp/atari/new.
-
- this archive contains whatis, whatisin, and apropos which are parts of some
- unix (BSD, i think) manual systems. these are, however, my own versions.
- i use a different format for the whatis database (i use a separate file
- for each manual section and include more info than just name, section,
- and description (for instance entries from "SEE ALSO" sections are used
- as cross references, and you can also include keywords for apropos).
-
- here is what these programs do:
-
- whatis given a name of a command, system call, library
- routine, etc, whatis prints a one line description
- whatisin prints a table of contents of the manual, or with
- an argument representing a section ([0-9lno]), lists
- a one line entry of all manpages for that section
- apropos given a keyword, apropos prints a list of all
- manpages that might be appropriate to look at (eg
- "apropos file" will list every manpage that has
- "file" in its name, description, or keyword list)
-
- also include is a mkwhatis(8) program to help make the databases. also
- included are some example whatis databases.
-
- enjoy...
