- It's not only a good idea, but -IMO- it's absolutely necessary to defragment
- your hard disk every once in a while. It absolutely speeds up HD-access. I
- suppose it's not too hard to imagine that reading a file that is scatered in
- 10 pieces takes more time than reading the same file when it's stored in one
- contiguous block... :)
- There are several programs that perform the trick, but they're not all able to
- defragment all kinds of HDs. For example: I have a 210Meg Quantum HD (lucky me
- :) and most defragmenters can't cope with this disk, due to
- 'non-standard-Atari' logical sectors (I think). They're 1k instead of 512 bytes
- and most programs get confused by this.
- I use CHKDISK3 and ST_TOOLS and both are very useful for analyzing your HD,
- find lost and orphan clusters, recover deleted files, analyzing the FATs, etc.
- I don't know if CHKDISK also defragments HDs, but I'm sure ST_TOOLS does.
- I don't know where these programs can be found - try atari.archive. If you're
- desperate, mail me.
-
- Hope this helps,
