- Here we go again; comparing a keyboard computer, a toy (with some considerable
- professional potential though), a niche product to a industrial standard
- business machine, which because of low prices also are becoming a home computer
- (but still is designed for business use).
- Complaints on too litle memory capacity on the falcon is plain stupid. Yes it
- is limited to 14MB, but taken the main target use for this machine, it's just
- right. But it is quite possible to upgrade with fast-ram, and then the limit is
- 4GB! No, it's not as easy as upgrading a PC, one have to by some third-party
- do-it-yourself expansion kit, but nevertheless possible for those who want.
- Machines with same target-niche these days have 1MB standard, and can be
- upgraded (with standard solutions) to typicaly 2 or 4 MB!
- And remember, on PC's most software, and the most common OS, is limited to
- the 'real huge' amount of 640K, leaving some 63Meg (the above mentioned figure,
- but could be anny XX MB) as ramdisk or disk-cache. TOS have never been realy
- limited on maximum RAM other than that of physically limitations on the
- processor. And for those who run applications needing real huge amounts of
- memory, ther's the TT which for which there now is 64MB RAM-boards available,
- and soon to be produced (have seen a woorking prototype) 256MB RAM-Boards.
- No need for memory drivers, 'highloading', etc.
- PC's and memory is NOT the right argument to use about the 'superiority' of
- PC's over ST/TT/Falcon030!! How many PC applications take advantage of more
- memory than 640K? Most (99.9%) ST applications take advantage of ALL installed
- (free) memory! Eh, wel, not quite right on the TT, because you have to choose
- between FAST (4MB - 64MB or even more) or SYSTEM RAM (2MB - 10MB) on older
- applications.
