- I've pretty much made up my own mind that the Falcon is probably *my* right
- choice... So I'll throw in and answer the question someone posted and say
- I'd get one.
-
- My reasons are fairly simple...
-
- 1) My main uses for a computer are MIDI, programming and telecomm. I'm getting
- more serious about my MIDI, but the Atari satisfies that need fine. For
- programming, well, I can do that on anything with interesting hardware. The
- Falcon is an inspirational machine from the specs. As for telecomm, I'm
- not a power-user in that respect, and I can't see anything that could make
- my telecommunications existence that much easier to justify moving on to
- another platform.
-
- 2) Even though it's "just" a 16mhz '030, with so much of the machine apparently
- designed to take a load off the CPU, I think it'll satisfy my need for
- speed.
-
- 3) *IF* (big if) the machine sold well, it might prosper as well as the ST
- did from '85-'88, when it wasn't a "threat" but was a respectable machine
- to have. For $1300, I can live with that.
-
- 4) The price of software on Ataris seems more reasonable, overall. I've gotten
- "big" (for the price, mind you) results from my hobbyist software on the
- ST that has helped me immeasurably. Heck, I've got a job doing X-Windows
- because I have experience with the GEM GUI on my ST. So at least that
- helped one teenage hacker... :)
-
-
- Just out of curiosity, I am wondering what the primary concerns of those who
- are considering jumping to the PC/Mac, etc... platforms are? I've noticed
- that what people who jump are looking for is a large software base, with the
- "options" of doing pretty much anything they want available to them. I think
- that's a pretty valid reason... but are there other considerations?
