****************Falcon Specs*******************
Before beginning I would like to state I am by no means an authority on
Atari and it's line of machines, but only a user with a the usual Atari
experiences.
The Falcon in Summary: Basically 680300 based machine,1-2-4-14meg ram configs,
Motorolla 56001 DSP, Digital Sampling, CD quality sound, 1040 STe style case,
SCSI II, Lan, NO VME,and all other STE features. As reported by Atari Advantageit has no external floppy port, on this issue I let you pass judgement.
The price (rumour) compares favourably to that of a Mac classic but it has more power than a Mac LCII (from specs that is). I dont think (my opinion) it is very high end. I also feel the hype and passing of judgement on the various aspects of this system are not neccessary as it is yet unreleased. If the above specs are true though it beats it's nearest competition in price/feature range. However if users desire power, pray for an internally expandable falcon 040.
The questions I must now raise are 1) will this machine be released b/4 Xmas.
2) How will Atari market it ( I hear Atari Canada just closed out ??!!)
3) Will we seee this on T.v. ?
4) How does atari view third party expansion e.g. graphics, accelerators, etc.
Some you guys in cyberspace may blast me for saying this (especially those
amiga advocacy fanatics) but Atari and Commodore may be left behind if they
don't get their act together. I mean I would like to own a Falcon or an A3000
but what can a user do if he gets no support from his Computer company. The
reality is there are many unhappy dealers, users and former users. If you want to find out about this just speak with some Atari dealers. The ones I spoke to
did not know much about some "released Atari products". I would have bought a TT if the dealers I spoke to knew how to obtain TT unix, which I could have used on the campus net. Now I'm using an RS-6000 in the campus lab.
GOOD-LUCK ATARIANS.
