- I'm not some fanatical "FALCON RULES" maniac--we already have a couple
- of those running around. But I do tend to think that speed is overrated,
- that it is looked upon as the answer to all our computing problems.
- I've used text editors on an 8086-based PC which I much prefer to the
- one I'm using right now on a Sun workstation. It's the same way for
- everything--just upping the processor speed doesn't make software any
- better. (The famous "gcc" doesn't compiler any faster than ol'
- Deep Blue C on my 800. This is a meaningless example, but something
- to think about.)
-
- I find that most processors have a whole lot more speed than I'll
- ever need, and I'm talking about "slow" things like the 80286 and
- 68000. A 16 MHz 68030 may not be the current state of the art, but
- it isn't exactly a slouch either (and that's a severe understatement).
- It is looked upon as underpowered, though, because it is common in
- the MS-DOS world to throw around all sorts of meaningless statistics
- and impressive sounding numbers.
-
- [If megahertz is the sole indicator of computer power and usefulness,
- then the Atari Classics staff might as well call it quits...]
