- To unpack a '.tar' (Tape ARchive) file, type the following on your Unix box:
-
- tar -vfx filename.tar
-
- To unpack a '.shar' (SHell ARchive) file, type the following (again only on
- Unix):
-
- filename.shar
-
- You may need to execute-enable a shar file before the system will allow you
- to run it...do a
-
- chmod filename.shar 777
-
- and all should be well. (yes, I know that enables more permissions than are
- actually needed =).
-
- There is no real advantage to using these types of archives, but they are the
- standard for Unix/Ultrix/SunOS/HP-UX/A-UX/AIX/Linux/etc systems. I undersand
- that the 'tar' utility is also avalible for GNO and possibly also the other
- shells like Orca, ECP-16, etc.
