- The questioners here are asking about a feature of ProSel that Glen Bredon
- calls "problem file delete" and it is discussed in the section of the manual
- under Utilities; Getting rid of problem files - this in my docs printout
- for ProSel-16 is on p. 35 -- I don't have the newer printed manual and page
- number there may be different.
-
- The process is to use the Sort function of Utilities on the directory holding
- the problem file. Hilite the problem file and move it to the very bottom of
- the list. Now hit COMMAND-DELETE (OpenApple-Delete). (BEWARE: this function
- ZEROS the file entry in the directory block and NOTHING of the entry is left
- - there have been occasions when I did NOT want this to happen and used a
- different, but almost the same way with a block editor.)
-
- Next, you will hit return and finally write the changed directory back to
- disk. The problem file will be gone BUT THE BITMAP FOR THE VOLUME HAS NOT
- BEEN UPDATED AND IS NOT YET CORRECT. To fix this you have to run Volume
- Repair or Mr. Fixit in Fix mode and tell it to free the "Unused blocks marked
- used". I always do a Test mode run first to see what errors I'm going to get
- and if there are any other kinds of errors, I'd want to make sure there
- aren't major problems to be addressed before the real Fix mode run.
-
- BTW, excuse me for focusing on ProSel-16 above - the same functionality is
- present in Cat.Doctor from ProSel-8.
