- Need some help from some Apple II hardware gurus:
-
- This afternoon I was trying to help a friend transfer some software from
- a 5.25" drive to 3.5" so he could use his old Laser 128 software on his Mac
- via II in a Mac. He had a 5.25" half-height plain vanilla drive that was
- IIc Smartport compatible. Since the GS smartport accepts both the Apple
- Drive 5.25 and the IIc's UniDisk 3.5, I assumed the drive would be compatible
- with the GS Smartport.
-
- When we put a 5.25" disk in the drive and double-clicked on the 5.25 icon from
- Finder 6.0 (Apple Drive 5.25 driver and DOS 3.3, ProDOS, and Pascal FSTs were
- active), after a few seconds the 5.25 drive spun, but the computer hung. I
- rebooted into ProDOS 8 and tried booting off of the 5.25 directly but without
- success.
-
- At this point we gave up, powered down, and disconnected his hardware. Upon
- trying to boot from the Apple Drive 3.5, however, I got a "Check Startup
- Device" error if I set the boot slot to slot 5 in the Control Panel, and I
- got a "No Device Connected Error" if I went into Applesoft and did an old
- PR#5. All further attempts to access the 3.5 on the GS were in vain.
-
- Hooking the 3.5 up to his Mac's smartport, however, produced favorable results
- with a Mac 800K disk. So I assume there is a problem with the Smartport and
- not the drive.
-
- My questions, what's the problem, can it be fixed w/o taking the thing to a
- Macintosh dealer and having him charge me $1000 for a new motherboard? How
- much would it cost?
-
- The rest of the system works fine (I'm typing on the GS now). It's just that
- the smartport seems gone. Can anyone help?
-
- Mike
-
- PS: Todd, will your Tulin floptical read ProDOS 800K disks?
