  16. Here is one explanation I've heard, it may be right:

  18. It was cancelled due to political reasons. People have always
  19. compared Motorola and Intel processors, and they have had one
  20. digit in common most of the time on processors of similar power.

  23. 80286 - 68020
  24. 80386 - 68030
  25. 80486 - 68040

  27. The comparable processors has come out not so far from each other
  28. (in time), but it seems like Motorola will have it's processor ready
  29. much later than the Intel 80586/P5. It's then better to call it a
  30. 68060, they think. It may also be much more powerful than the P5.

  32. I beleive they always work on at least two processor designs in 
  33. parallell, since it takes a long time to complete a processor.
  34. Maybe the 68050 design went into a dead end and it was cancelled, and
  35. the 68060 stayed with it's name.
