- REPLACING 68000 CPU -> 68010 ON AMIGA 500
-
- Some time ago, somebody told me it was possible to simply replace the 68000
- CPU in an A500 (1.3) with a 68010. This would make the computer 20 - 30 %
- faster. This sounds to me like a cheap way of getting a little more processing
- power in the machine. Does anybody know if this works? And if so: Have you
- tried it? Is the performance-improvement figure correct?
-
- Long ago there used to be a LOT of discussion on this topic. I put a 68010 in
- my A1000 about four years ago and have never had any trouble (except for a
- few older games that had problems). You need an extra exception handler like
- DeciGel or SuperDeciGel to trap an exception that can occur on a 68010 that
- would not occur on a 68k (more details if you wish, but if you load
- SuperDeciGel in your startup you won't have any problems).
-
- My personal experience with the performance increase has shown about
- 5% to 7% at most over a 68k. Depending on what you're doing it may be
- as low as 3%.
-
- BUT, it is an increase, and 68010s are pretty cheap these days. The upgrade
- is as simple as popping out the 68k and plugging the 68010 in its place.
