- I have a 3000 with 2 meg chip and 2 meg fast, which is made up of 4x256K Zips
- (not sure whether they are static column or not) That makes 16 chips for the
- 2 meg fast, am I right??
-
- YES: 2 banks of 8 chips (1M/bank), but those are 256Kx4 Zips.
-
- Anyway in order to transfer my chips over to the 4x1MB static column Zips, and
- increase my fast memory from 2 meg to, say, 4meg, I understand that this
- will require 8 chips per meg, which equates to 32 chips. At $14-15 per chip
- we have $110-120 (US) per meg. Down here that equates to over $200 per meg
- which will cost me at least $400 just to get back where I started
-
- I am not sure what you mean by getting back to where you started, but to get
- 4M, you would need to add 16 more 256Kx4 chips; 2 banks of 8 chips (1M/bank).
- This would fill out all the Fast Memory slots. To get more Fast Memory, you
- would need to switch ALL Fast Memory chips to the 1Mx4 chips. Since these
- are larger, you only need 1 bank of 8 chips to get 4M, so that filling all 32
- slots would give you 16M of Fast Memory. So from your figures, 4M with the
- 1Mx4 would cost $200.
-
-
- What I want to know is: Are these assumptions correct? Can anyone both in NZ
- and overseas confirm this??
-
- Obviously 8 rather than 4 of the 4x256K Zips are required to make 1 meg. Again
- I assume this is because of the 32 bit requirements.
- And likewise, 8 of the 1Meg chips are needed for 1 meg of memory with
- those chips.
-
- Partially correct. You always need 8 chips per bank; 4 bits/chip * 8 =
- 32bits/bank in terms of words. However, the bank of 256Kx4 chips provides 1M
- while the bank of 1Mx4 provides 4M of memory.
-
- Sorry I'm not a techie! AdvaTHANKSnce... Matt
