- I'm running an A3000/25-100, 2M chip, 4M fast, with an A2232 serial card
- installed. I get the same kind of heat problems that Jeff describes, usually on
- those pesky hot summer days after the systems been running for an hour or so.
- Graphics get trashed, normally stable apps roll over and die, etc.
- I moved the A2232 up to the highest slot available, to give the motherboard
- some 'breathing room', bought a small desk fan and aimed it at the vent on the
- front of the unit (my power supply fan also blows out of the case), and stopped
- using the machine when it was too hot... ;) (I realize the last step may not
- be useful to some people...). The mystery problems went away.
- With regards to dust, well. One way or the other, it'll get into your system.
- If you put a filter on, you'll just get finer dust inside, and still have to clean
- the filter, otherwise it gets clogged up and cuts the air flow. Then you have a
- system that, although clean, still runs hotter than it might have otherwise...
- Unless you live in a problem area (ie very dry or very humid, or with a whole
- wack of dust), I wouldn't worry about it. Just pop the case open and blow it out
- once a year. Any more than that and you're asking for problems (static, physical
- damage, etc).
- Other than messing around with fans, anyone got ideas as to handling this
- sort of problem? (And going into the case with a heat gun and a can of freeze
- spray to find the weak IC is not my idea of a good way to kill an afternoon. ;) )
