- You're welcome, Cem. I expect some of what I say will get corrected, but here
- goes.
-
- adding the 'bis' CHANGES the MEANING of the v.32 and v.42; there are different!
- (They just happen to look alike).
-
- v.32 - the "standard" for communicating at 9600 baud (CCCIT, I think)
-
- v.32bis - the "standard" for communicating at 14400 baud
-
- v.42 - an error correction standard
-
- v.42bis - a data compression standard. This is a "smart" standard -- if having
- the compression ACTIVE is deteriorating the transfer, it is supposed to turn
- itself off. (files that are already compressed usually deteriorate when the
- v.42bis standard is applied).
-
- NOTES:
- a) Standards are not "upward compatible" -- just because a modem is v.32bis
- DOES NOT MEAN that it will work at 9600, 4800, 2400, or 1200. It ONLY means it
- wil work at 14400. Having said that, almost all modems support ALL the
- standard protocols (I've never seen one that didn't).
-
- b) v.42 is NECESSARY for high-speed (>2400 baud) connections.
