  12. i believe an 8520 (or two) in my ol' 1000 is flaking out (again), although the
  13. symptoms are sporadic and inconcise compared to the previous blow-out.

  15. is there a proof-positive method of proving an 8520 as the culprit?
  16. a diagnostics hack would be the ideal, although i'll take anything.

  18. last time this happened, i pulled out the bad 8520 and put in a new one;
  19. however, one leg of the chip got bent and broke the connection on that slot in
  20. the socket.  i sent it out to get a new socket at the supposed 'best' amiga
  21. repair shop.  this took 5 months and over 30 threatening phone calls.  when
  22. it was finally sent back, UPS mishandled it enough to knock off both the
  23. internal floppy heads.  on UPS claims instructions, i took it to a local
  24. repair shop to have the drive replaced.  this took three weeks, even though
  25. the item was in stock.  my patience expired during this period and i called
  26. them one day saying "i'm coming to get it.  it BETTER (explative) BE DONE!".
  27. when i arrived, they said "here ya go, all fixed".  i demanded we test it
  28. before they receive a cent.  the machine did not function at all.  i took it
  29. apart and what did i find -- TWO empty slots where 8520's should be.  they
  30. 'found' them whilst blubbering responsibility-shurking rhetoric and thus
  31. began to reassemble the machine after a second, successful test.  i watched on
  32. as the monkey put the screws in the holes until one didn't fit (screw too
  33. large: wrong screw).  instead of trying another screw, the ape just pressed
  34. harder and harder down on the screwdriver causing evil noises of unbridled
  35. destruction.  i promptly took the machine and a handful of screws from him and
  36. left.

  38. with this in mind, you can plainly see why i'd prefer to know if the 8520(s)
  39. are indeed the problem before i swap it/them out.
