  15. Requesting Testers For A New Emacs Shell Mode

  17. I'm in the process of writing a new shell mode for Emacs, one that
  18. improves upon currently-available shell modes such as cmushell and
  19. Emacs's shell-mode.  It's nearly finished, but before I release it,
  20. I'd like to have some other Emacs shell users give it a try, and give
  21. me some feedback.  I've been using this mode on a regular basis for
  22. the past year and it works well--on my machine with my shell and my
  23. version of Emacs; I'd like to know how well the mode works with other
  24. machines, shells, and Emacs versions.

  26. This new shell-mode, which I call j-shell, has the following
  27. features:

  29.     Improved directory tracking
  30.     Built-in filename completion
  31.     Password prompt detection (passwords don't echo)
  32.     Command history and functions for browsing it
  33.     Improved navigation commands
  34.     Prevents pty buffer overflow (^G problem)
  35.     An alternate mode-line to display the working dir

  37. Originally I designed j-shell to work with tcsh (the shell I prefer),
  38. but I have since made it flexible so as to work with csh, ksh, zsh,
  39. and bash--any shell that is capable of aliasing its cd and related
  40. commands.  The only shell I know not to work is sh, because its cd
  41. command can't be aliased.  I'm hoping to hear from a variety of shell
  42. users so as to test j-shell extensively on all shells.
