- As you may know, the Capability Maturity Model was released last August as
- version 1.0. We have been revising CMM v1.0 in light of community feedback;
- the CMM v1.01 drafts have been available via anonymous ftp over the Internet.
- One of the concerns that has been expressed is that the review period was
- too short. As a result of that concern, I mailed the following letter to
- the CMM Correspondence Group. It is being posted to this newsgroup to ensure
- that the Internet community is also aware that we have extended the commenting
- period on CMM v1.01.

-
- Dear colleague,
-
- The bulk of CMM v1.01 has been mailed to the CMM Correspondence
- Group, and we have been getting comments back on the revision
- drafts. One concern that has been expressed is that the review time is
- too short.
-
- There is some justice to this concern. Several items were not ready to
- go out until 1 September, which was the original target for getting
- comments back. We extended the commenting period to 11
- September, but some items were unavoidably delayed in reproduction
- and distribution. In particular, the revised version of TR-24 went out
- late.
-
- While we want to hold to our schedule, we also want to be responsive
- to your concerns. We had planned for each item to have about a two-
- week review cycle, which has clearly not been the case. If you did not
- have two weeks to review an item, we will accept your comments up
- to 25 September. At that time all comments received will be
- reproduced and distributed to the CMM Revision Team, the CMM
- Advisory Board, and the CMM Change Control Board, for their use in
- reviewing CMM v1.02.
-
- Comments have been received to the effect that the changes to
- Organization Process Definition, Skill Building, Integrated Software
- Management, and Quantitative Process Management were too great for
- a minor revision and/or not justified by the change requests. We
- would particularly appreciate feedback in these areas. The CMM
- Advisory Board can recommend another round of public reviews, if
- they deem it desirable to delay CMM v1.1 until these concerns are
- resolved.
-
- The glossary and the TR-25 Overview will still be handled as special
- cases per my letter of 27 August and will probably be mailed to the
- Correspondence Group for review at the beginning of October.
-
- Sincerely,
-
