- Intelligence
-
- Wrest Point Convention Centre, Hobart, Tasmania
- 16 - 18th November, 1992
-
-
- INVITATION
- I extend a warm invitation for you to attend the 5th
- Australian Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence to
- be hosted by the University of Tasmania. The Conference
- is to be held at the Wrest Point Hotel Convention Centre
- which has been chosen for its excellent conference
- facilities and splendid outlook over the River Derwent.
- These combine to offer a relaxing environment for
- informal socialising and technical discussion amongst
- delegates.
- The conference will cover practical and research themes
- and is intended to encourage the mixing of practitioners
- and researchers in the artificial intelligence community.
- To promote this the conference has been divided into
- two streams, one consisting of formal papers and the
- other for informal poster sessions. A special technology
- transfer session, sponsored by DITAC, will offer
- delegates insights into state-of-the-art commercial
- applications within Australia.
- The highlight of the social programme will be the gala
- dinner featuring entertainment from Greg Champion, of
- the Coodabeen Champions radio show.
- AI'92 is conducted under the auspices of the Australian
- Computer Society's National Committee for Artificial
- Intelligence and Expert Systems. As well as being
- Australia's National Conference for artificial intelligence,
- the Australian Joint Conference has traditionally
- attracted interest from overseas, especially the Pacific
- Region.

- TUTORIAL PROGRAMME
-
- Prolog Programming for Artificial Intelligence
- with Leon Sterling
- Wednesday 18 November 2:00pm-6:00pm
- Synopsis
- This tutorial is aimed at programmers and knowledge
- engineers who want to improve their Prolog
- programming skills, and/or who wish to write programs
- that are easier to develop and maintain. The method of
- stepwise enhancement will be discussed and will be
- demonstrated in the context of an explanation shell for
- expert systems. Some familiarity with logic
- programming is assumed.
- About the tutor
- Leon Sterling is Associate Professor of Computer
- Engineering and Science at Case Western Reserve
- University. He received a BSc(Hons) degree in
- Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of
- Melbourne and a PhD in Mathematics from the
- Australian National University. He has been a Research
- fellow in Artificial Intelligence at the University of
- Edinburgh, Scotland, and the Weizmann Institute of
- Science, Israel. His research interests lie primarily in
- logic programming and artificial intelligence. He is an
- acknowledged expert in the teaching of Prolog, and its
- use in applications. He is co-author of the leading Prolog
- textbook The Art of Prolog, editor of The Practice of
- Prolog, a collection of Prolog applications, and has given
- tutorials at AAAI, IJCAI and Logic Programming
- conferences. He is currently on sabbatical at Monash
- University and the Collaborative Information Technology
- Research Institute at the University of Melbourne.
-
- Building Maintainable Expert Systems
- with John Debenham
- Wednesday 18 November , 2:00pm-6:00pm
- Synopsis
- A rigorous design methodology for expert systems will
- be presented. Key features of this
- methodology are
- - it is platform independent and is based on the
- construction of a model;
- - it employs a powerful and simple notation;
- - it actually derives a good, maintainable model;
- - it is compatible with conventional database design
- methodologies, and
- - it is supported by a software tool.
- The methodology has been devised in a major joint
- research project between the University of Technology,
- Sydney and the CSIRO Division of Information
- Technology. It has been used in industry, and has been
- validated. The tutorial will focus on recent
- developments in this project in particular
- - a new, uniform approach to modelling data,
- information and knowledge, and
- - new work on constraints for knowledge.
- A generous set of notes will be provided to each
- participant.
- About the tutor
- John Debenham has a joint appointment with the
- University of Technology, Sydney and the CSIRO.
- Division of Information Technology. At the University of
- Technology, Sydney, John is Professor of Computer
- Science and Director of the Key Centre for Advanced
- Computing Sciences. At the Division of Information
- Technology he is a Visiting Scientist. He graduated in
- mathematics from Trinity College Dublin before moving
- to the University of Sydney to complete a PhD in
- Mechanised Reasoning. Professor Debenham is widely
- known in Australia for his publications and conference
- papers on the design of expert, knowledge-based
- systems. Much of his early work is reported in the
- monograph on Knowledge Systems Design which was
- published by Prentice Hall early in 1989. His recent
- research work has involved both the development of a
- unified approach to modelling data, information and
- knowledge, and the development of families of
- constraints for knowledge. Professor Debenham has
- worked extensively with industry. He has provided
- consulting services to large corporations and
- government bodies on the introduction of knowledge
- processing. At the CSIRO's Division of Information
- Technology he is involved in a major project on the
- construction of a software tool for building knowledge
- bases; this tool is called The Knowledge Analyst's
- Assistant.
-

- Climate
- Unlike the rest of Australia, Tasmania has four distinct
- seasons and the climate is temperate. On average the
- days should be mild and the evenings cooler. For
- outings it is a good idea to have a light raincoat just in
- case! The average temperature range in November is 9
- to 19 degrees C.
-
- A Voyage to the South Land
- On 14 August 1642, Abel Janszoon Tasman was sent
- from Batavia to lead an expedition of two vessels, the
- Heemskerck and the Zeehaen, to investigate the extent
- of the land thought to exist between New Guinea and the
- Western Coast of Australia. His aim was to find a
- southern route from Java to Chile to enable Company
- ships to trade along the Pacific Coast of South
- America.Tasman found the extreme southern latitudes
- too hostile and on 24 November 1642, he sighted land -
- the West Coast of Tasmania. This mountainous land was
- the first Tasman had sighted in the Southern Seas and
- according to the charts was not known to any European
- nation. Tasman named it Van Diemen's Land in honour
- of Anthony Van Diemen, Governor General of the East
- India Company. To commemorate the landing by Tasman
- and his party at Tasman Bay, Forestier Peninsula in
- 1642, a commemorative medallion has been struck and
- each delegate will receive one with the compliments of
- the Organising Committee and with assistance from the
- Tasmanian Branch of the ACS.
-
- Australian XI vs. West Indies
- An international cricket match will be held in Hobart
- from 14-17 November. The first two days of this are
- during the weekend before the conference. Mures
- Convention Management will be able to assist with
- tickets if required.
