- Good day, all...
-
- Here's the situation. We have two VAX 6000-4xx clustered. They are
- connected to two Ethernet segments via bridged DELNIs. Each DELNI is
- connected to an Ethernet segment with a H4005, with heartbeat ON. The
- Ethernet controllers on both VAXen are 802.3 compliant.

-
- Have also tried a Cabletron NB20 bridge in place of the LANbridge 100.
-
- Here's the problem/issue. Should the heartbeat on the H4005s be enabled?
- If it is, we appear to get lots of collisions showing up on the bridge, and
- the network is sometimes unreliable, apparently causing dropped sessions
- and other problems. If it is not enabled, physical collisions go away, but
- DECnet shows many collision detects in the log. A well-known networking
- consultant says yes, VAX 6000-4xx systems *must* have the heartbeat; but
- DEC says not, and the 802.3 "standard" says not.
-
- Are we missing something? Can you shed light on the matter? Thanks.
