- The pinout for a test connector depends on exactly what hardware
- you are trying to test. DEC has supplied loopback connectors with
- different part numbers for: DMF32, DSRVB, and DMB32.
-
- You will either need to purchase the proper DEC part or invent your
- own. Jumpering 2-3 is easy and obvious. 4-5 is as easy and almost as
- obvious but what are you testing and what are you going to test it with?
- RTS(4) and CTS (5) last had more or less standard usage back in the days of
- half duplex FSK modems; there was a protocol for determining who would talk
- and who should listen. You could also jumper DSR (6) and CD (8) to DTR
- (20), in fact you would have to if you enabled modem control on the port.
- Again, what are you testing and what are you going to test it with?
-
- The only software that I know of for testing serial ports is DEC's
- diagnostic software for the hardware in question. DEC's software will work
- best, or only, with the proper DEC part or exact equivalent. You could
- write your own, but what for? Are you going to do component level repair
- of the port when you discover that, for example, it can't see CD from the
- modem? All DEC would do would be to establish that the port was defective,
- and swap out the board. That's about all you will be able to do.
