- and in Computer and Information Sciences. The Computer Engineering
- Department currently has 11 faculty and more than 60 graduate students.
- Areas of active and externally funded research in the Computer Engineering
- Department include computer architecture, VLSI design, image and digital
- signal processing, computer graphics, communications and networks, and
- image systems and data compression. Related research by the Computer &
- Information Sciences Department includes languages and environments,
- computer graphics, distributed systems, operating systems, computer
- systems design, and computer applications.
-
- AREAS OF INTEREST:
- The goal of the REINAS (Real-time Environmental Information Network and
- Analysis System) project is to develop an architecture and system to gather and
- integrate data from geographically dispersed sensors and to control individual
- programmable sensors; to store, manage, and provide secure distributed access
- to this data; and to facilitate real-time operational use of this data by
- environmental scientists at geographically distributed locations.
-
- The system will provide support for real-time data acquisition, visualization,
- and management of large environmental data sets. The focus is on the design,
- development, and implementation of an efficient architecture for data
- collection, management, processing and visualization in real-time for
- applications in meteorology and oceanography.
-
- The Research Computer Engineer will be responsible for day-to-day management of
- the systems development team (consisting of several graduate students and
- staff), will have a major role (with faculty investigators) in all phases of
- the architecture and design, and will supervise the implementation of the

- protocols and interfaces, developing and implementing software engineering
- methodology for this project, writing design documents, and working with
- various vendors to procure the necessary equipment.
-
- MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. or equivalent in Computer Engineering,
- Electrical Engineering, Computer Sciences or closely related field is
- required. Substantial experience with large software projects, project
- management, and software engineering methodology, distributed systems
- and networks is preferred.
-
- RANK: Assistant Research Computer Engineer or Associate Research Computer Engineer
