  67.            DESCRIPTION                                                          
  68.            USER PRODUCTIVITY                                                    
  69.            PRODUCTIVITY OF END-USERS:  Graphics and diagrams are an effective   
  70.            way of presenting information to end users and are becoming          
  71.            increasingly popular (Data Visualization).                           
  72.                   The productivity of users of applications with a graphical    
  73.            interface is increased because the information they work with is     
  74.            presented in a form that is more clearly understood.  This will lead 
  75.            to:                                                                  
  76.            o   Faster perception of the presented information and quicker user  
  77.                response.                                                        
  78.            o   Reduced error rate occurring at data interpretation.             
  79.            o   Reduced learning time for the users of a program because of:     
  80.                -   Intuitive interaction with the application and better        
  81.                    presentation of the information provided by the application. 
  82.                -   CUA-conformance, if the end users have already learned to use
  83.                    other CUA-conforming programs.                               
  84.                -   Increased acceptance of the application by end users.        
  85.                   Unfortunately, writing code for such a graphical interface and
  86.            ensuring consistency with CUA is difficult and time consuming.  For a
  87.            typical program with 50,000 lines of code, 15,000-20,000 lines of    
  88.            highly sophisticated code may be needed for the interface.           
  89.            PRODUCTIVITY OF PROGRAMMERS:  Graphics Interface Kit/2 provides a    
  90.            dramatic increase in the productivity of programmers who develop and 
  91.            maintain programs.  Graphics Interface Kit/2 can be learned quickly  
  92.            and relatively less skilled and less experienced people can use it,  
  93.            because they are relieved from writing the complex interface code.

  130.            Graphics Interface Kit/2 implements an advanced design concept that  
  131.            strictly separates application logic and data management from data   
  132.            presentation and handling of user interactions.  Due to this design  
  133.            concept, existing programs can easily be enhanced by adding a        
  134.            graphical user interface.  Graphics Interface Kit/2 imposes no       
  135.            restrictions on the application or program that uses it; therefore,  
  136.            investments made in existing programs are fully protected.           
  137.                   Existing graphics work can be reused by an interface developed
  138.            with Graphics Interface Kit/2 because the product allows the         
  139.            importation of OS/2 bitmaps and icons as they may be produced by     
  140.            commercial drawing systems.

  185.            SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT                                      
  186.            MACHINE REQUIREMENTS:  Both Graphics Interface Kit/2 and Graphics    
  187.            Interface Runtime/2 operate on any programmable workstation capable  
  188.            of running OS/2 2.0.  The programs require the following memory and  
  189.            hard disk space in addition to those used by OS/2 2.0:

  193.                   Every workstation also requires a video adapter and a video   
  194.            display supported by OS/2 2.0.  The user interfaces of both programs 
  195.            are optimized for color display.  Standard VGA resolution (640x480)  
  196.            is sufficient, but higher resolution is recommended.  An 8514 high   
  197.            resolution screen with the 8514A adapter will provide optimum        
  198.            results.  If you use a monochrome display, you must take care to     
  199.            select the proper foreground and background shades of grey.          
  200.                   A mouse is recommended.  Any printer or plotter supported by  
  201.            OS/2 2.0 can be used.                                                
  202.                   For the Japanese language version of the product, a Japanese  
  203.            keyboard is required.                                                
  204.            PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS                                             
  205.            o   IBM Operating System/2 (OS/2) 2.0                                
  206.            o   IBM OS/2 2.0 Developer's Toolkit (5871-AAA and P/N 10G3355)      
  207.            o   IBM C Set/2, the SAA 32-bit C Compiler (5871-AAA and P/N 10G2996)
  208.                   For execution of programs or applications with a graphic      
  209.            interface developed with Graphics Interface Kit/2, a Graphics        
  210.            Interface Runtime/2 license is required on each workstation where    
  211.            these applications are executed.                                     
  212.            COMPATIBILITY:  The diagram files and design files created with the  
  213.            Graphics Services component of IBM SAA AD/Cycle Workstation          
  214.            Platform/2 (5621-131) are upward compatible.                         
  215.            PLANNING INFORMATION                                                 
  216.                   Graphics Interface Kit/2 Version 1.0 requires 6MB of space on 
  217.            a hard disk.                                                         
  218.                   Graphics Interface Runtime/2 Version 1.0 requires 0.7MB of    
  219.            disk space on the hard disk of each workstation where an application 
  220.            using the Graphical interface will be executed.                      
  221.            INSTALLABILITY:  Applications or programs that have been written with
  222.            the Graphics Services Component of IBM SAA AD/Cycle Workstation

  224.            Platform/2 (5621-131) have to be reviewed and changed if the Graphics
  225.            Interface Runtime/2 will be used for execution of these programs or  
  226.            applications.                                                        
  227.            PACKAGING:  Graphics Interface Kit/2 is shipped on 3.5-inch          
  228.            double-density diskettes.  These diskettes contain all functions     
  229.            necessary to develop, test and execute applications with a graphical 
  230.            interface.  This includes:                                           
  231.            o   A DLL with the graphical functions of the product                
  232.            o   The online USER'S GUIDE AND REFERENCE                            
  233.            o   Online Help information                                          
  234.            o   Sample applications including source code.                       
  235.            Together with the diskettes, the following publication, GRAPHICS     
  236.            INTERFACE KIT/2, GETTING STARTED, (SH19-8189) will be shipped.       
  237.                   The Graphics Interface Runtime/2 package is shipped on one    
  238.            3.5-inch double-density diskette, including a DLL with the graphic   
  239.            functions and one sample application, which can be used to test the  
  240.            runtime product.                                                     
  241.            SECURITY, AUDITABILITY AND CONTROL                                   
  242.                   The Graphics Interface Kit/2 uses the security and            
  243.            auditability features of Operating System/2.                         
  244.                   User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and 
  245.            implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and  
  246.            appropriate controls in application systems and communication        
  247.            facilities.                                                          
  248. ORDERING   ORDERING INFORMATION                                                 
  249.                   Orders for new licenses will be accepted September 15, 1992.  
  250.            Unless a later date is specified, orders entered prior to the planned
  251.            availability date will be assigned a scheduled shipment date of April
  252.            3, 1993.  Shipment of orders will commence on the availability date.
