- TITLE GRAPHICS INTERFACE KIT/2 VERSION 1.0 AND GRAPHICS INTERFACE RUNTIME/2
- VERSION 1.0
- ABSTRACT Graphics Interface Kit/2 is a licensed product for Data
- Visualization. It generates graphical user interfaces for a wide
- range of applications and tools that can display information in
- graphical rather than textual form. It belongs to the category of
- CUA (TM) User Interface Prototyping and Development tools and runs
- under Operating System/2 (R) 2.0 on a programmable workstation (PWS).
- Graphics Interface Runtime/2 is needed on each workstation
- where an application developed with Graphics Interface Kit/2 will be
- executed.
- Planned Availability Date: March 26, 1993.

- OVERVIEW HIGHLIGHTS
- o Customer productivity is considerably raised in two different
- ways: productivity of end users, because of the intuitive and
- graphical way of data presentation achievable with Graphics
- Interface Kit/2; and the productivity of developers, who can
- create graphical interfaces with much less coding than previously
- required.
- o Adoption of a new technology for information presentation (data
- visualization) will facilitate the implementation of business
- solutions.
- o Investments for existing programs can be protected, as Graphics
- Interface Kit/2 enables developers to retrofit new graphical
- interfaces on existing applications.
- o Growth enablement of applications or tools with a graphical
- interface provided by Graphics Interface Kit/2 is ensured,
- because Graphics Interface Kit/2 supports the OS/2 (R) Workplace
- Shell (TM) and 32-bit operation.
- o Systems management is supported by the ease with which the
- product is installed (via an installation utility) and used.

- DESCRIPTION
- USER PRODUCTIVITY
- PRODUCTIVITY OF END-USERS: Graphics and diagrams are an effective
- way of presenting information to end users and are becoming
- increasingly popular (Data Visualization).
- The productivity of users of applications with a graphical
- interface is increased because the information they work with is
- presented in a form that is more clearly understood. This will lead
- to:
- o Faster perception of the presented information and quicker user
- response.
- o Reduced error rate occurring at data interpretation.
- o Reduced learning time for the users of a program because of:
- - Intuitive interaction with the application and better
- presentation of the information provided by the application.
- - CUA-conformance, if the end users have already learned to use
- other CUA-conforming programs.
- - Increased acceptance of the application by end users.
- Unfortunately, writing code for such a graphical interface and
- ensuring consistency with CUA is difficult and time consuming. For a
- typical program with 50,000 lines of code, 15,000-20,000 lines of
- highly sophisticated code may be needed for the interface.
- PRODUCTIVITY OF PROGRAMMERS: Graphics Interface Kit/2 provides a
- dramatic increase in the productivity of programmers who develop and
- maintain programs. Graphics Interface Kit/2 can be learned quickly
- and relatively less skilled and less experienced people can use it,
- because they are relieved from writing the complex interface code.
- Instead of 15,000-20,000 lines of code, only 1,000-2,000 lines of
- code are needed, typically resulting in a financial savings of
- $1 Million for one application. Maintenance cost is reduced
- accordingly.
- BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
- The presentation of complex information in simple form is very
- important for business applications. Especially in these days of
- information overload, business professionals are looking for new
- techniques and technologies to help them find the information they
- need. Graphics Interface Kit/2 enables designers and developers of
- application programs to generate graphical user interfaces for a
- great variety of business applications, with a reasonable effort. A
- graphical interface as implemented with Graphics Interface Kit/2
- presents structured information in graphical form and allows the end
- users to interact with the application in an effective and intuitive
- way by manipulating graphic objects on the screen instead of by
- searching text.
- Research indicates that appropriate graphical presentation is
- in many cases superior to simple textual presentations, leading to
- better and more accurate decisions by business professionals.
- Typical applications that can benefit from a graphical
- interface such as provided by Graphics Interface Kit/2 are:
- o Manufacturing and engineering applications
- DATA BASE : ALTR - Page: 3
- o Application development (AD/Cycle (TM)) tools
- o Business administration and financial applications
- o Information systems management (SystemView (TM)) tools
- o Transportation applications
- o Installation management applications
- In all the applications mentioned, it is worth remembering
- that not only does a graphic appear on the screen, but the graphic
- and its parts (nodes and links) represent the functions of the
- program and are connected to the application logic. All applications
- re-use the same generic capability of Graphics Interface Kit/2.
- (TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
- INVESTMENT PROTECTION
- Graphics Interface Kit/2 implements an advanced design concept that
- strictly separates application logic and data management from data
- presentation and handling of user interactions. Due to this design
- concept, existing programs can easily be enhanced by adding a
- graphical user interface. Graphics Interface Kit/2 imposes no
- restrictions on the application or program that uses it; therefore,
- investments made in existing programs are fully protected.
- Existing graphics work can be reused by an interface developed
- with Graphics Interface Kit/2 because the product allows the
- importation of OS/2 bitmaps and icons as they may be produced by
- commercial drawing systems.
- Investments in applications with Graphics Interface Kit/2 are
- protected because it conforms to the Common User Access (CUA); CUA is
- evolving and a new definition of the user interface is taking shape.
- By using Graphics Interface Kit/2, customers are relieved of much of
- the task of reprogramming their applications to meet the latest CUA
- guidelines.
- The screen representation of Graphics Interface Kit/2 is based
- on a device-independent coordinate system so that applications may be
- easily adapted to different screens without any reprogramming effort.
- Also, if a customer intends to upgrade to state-of-the-art
- hardware and software, no reinvestment is necessary. Customers,
- therefore, will find it easier to migrate their programs to run on
- state-of-the-art hardware under Operating System/2.
- GROWTH ENABLEMENT
- Graphics Interface Kit/2 is enabled to run in OS/2 2.0 32-bit mode
- and provides excellent growth capabilities for applications that use
- a graphic interface based on it.
- Due to its open design, applications or programs developed
- with Graphics Interface Kit/2 have considerable flexibility to be
- adapted according to the changing needs of the customer's business.
- SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
- Graphics Interface Kit/2 and Graphics Interface Runtime/2 can be used
- to implement systems management applications that conform to
- SystemView Integration Level 2.
- The product is delivered with an installation utility that
- provides a quick and easy installation methodology for the product.
- Through the intuitiveness of Graphics Interface Kit/2 and its
- ease of use, education and training of potential users can be
- minimized.

- TECHINFO TECHNICAL INFORMATION
- SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
- MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: Both Graphics Interface Kit/2 and Graphics
- Interface Runtime/2 operate on any programmable workstation capable
- of running OS/2 2.0. The programs require the following memory and
- hard disk space in addition to those used by OS/2 2.0:
- Program Memory Hard Disk Space
- Graphics Interface Kit/2 1MB 6MB
- Graphics Interface Runtime/2 1MB 0.7MB
- Every workstation also requires a video adapter and a video
- display supported by OS/2 2.0. The user interfaces of both programs
- are optimized for color display. Standard VGA resolution (640x480)
- is sufficient, but higher resolution is recommended. An 8514 high
- resolution screen with the 8514A adapter will provide optimum
- results. If you use a monochrome display, you must take care to
- select the proper foreground and background shades of grey.
- A mouse is recommended. Any printer or plotter supported by
- OS/2 2.0 can be used.
- For the Japanese language version of the product, a Japanese
- keyboard is required.
